Online Console Gaming 2003
by Maarten Goldstein, Jan 13, 2003 9:43am PSTA little later than expected, the latest part of Jason's Online Console Gaming article is now online, checking out the online features of the Microsoft Xbox. Besides offering impressions of the hardware and Microsoft network, Jason also takes a look at Moto GP, Whacked! and Mech Assault.
Microsoft is in something of a unique position among the console makers, as unlike the PlayStation 2 and GameCube, the Xbox actually ships with a built-in network adapter. While they could have enabled online multiplayer as a free update, Microsoft has invested a huge sum of money in their online network, and as a result, you have to pay to use it. What you get for your $50 is a DVD that updates your Xbox's OS with the Xbox Live software and has two playable game demos, the Xbox Live Communicator, a headset that plugs into your Xbox controller's expansion port, and one year of access to the Xbox Live network. Installing the hardware is a simple process ...Read it all here.

Although this is a closed network and MS has footed the bill for the majority of the peices of the network, the games are listen servers. I know that lots of Live subscribers dont understand this. They complain about slow servers and such.... the problem is that listen servers suck for larg MP games. They did back in the early days of quake and they do now. The Live network is good for maybe 4 palyer games...but no more then that. Anything with more then that starts to become to much for most broadband/xbox set ups.
So basicaly your paying $50 for a headset and a online community/browser. Im not knocking it...I have it...but I dont use it neary as much as I thought I would...
Persoanly I would love to see some xbl dedicated servers. Have MS realese some linux and wondows servers so we can have dedicated ghost recon and UT servers that run off T1's and such... now that would be cool.... but the chances of that are slim and none, and slim is not in today!

" If you've never seen it, MotoGP is a motorcycle racing game. And that's pretty much all that needs to be said. You get on a 'cycle and race around in circles. If you're into motorcycle racing games, that's probably all you need to know. This demo is more realistic than some games in the genre, but it's no Gran Turismo "
If you would have played MotoGP enough you would have learned that you can make is a simulation. It has all kinds of tweaks from 1-100 Off road, handling, and collision. That statement thats all that needs to be said makes me think you didnt really play the game. I played alot of racers on PC and Console and this is flat out the best. Grand prix legend great....Gran Turisimo...yawn
" This not being the most teamplay-oriented game in the world, chatter on the Communicator tends to be mostly distracting. There's a lot of smack-talk, a lot of friends throwing around idle chatter, and nothing terribly useful. "
Teamplay??? Look all talk in LIVE doesn't have to be useful. Its fun just laughing when you see people wipeout or whatever. example: If im going around somebody i let them know. You dont like smack talk huh?? Its pretty funny to me.
" MotoGP is a decent enough freebie for inclusion with the starter kit. It's not the most complete racing experience, as there's no real single player mode, but it is a solid demo, with an online experience that is enjoyable for a brief period of time. If you like this enough to want more, there's the full game you can purchase, so this demo gives all it really needs to."
Once again i disagree it is the complete racing experience. You need to check others views on this game. Because it just sounds like your not a racing fan. Moto GP is the best all around game on Xbox Live and you looked right past it. Best interface, Best use of voice, you can see who is talking when driving. Best options for hosting games, Allows you to kick players and options for simulation. In those few words i told more about the game than you. Terrible :-(

moto gp kicks ass, the online racing is amazing. with the exception of the morons who race backwards and try to screw everyone.
the friends/ players features are nice, you can kick people, and mute them out (that stupid child voice mask that people use is very anoying, the person that implimented that should be shot :)
the ability to invite your friends into your games etc...
xbox live is amazing, the racing is very competitive and exciting.
i think moto gp deserves a better review than what you gave it.
other games will come too.
enjoy your panzer dragoon orta, i'll enjoy motogp.
btw the demo of panzer dragoon orta sucked large.
i don't see how flying some beast in a straight line (maybe dodging the odd thing) can be exciting. kinda repetitive, slow, limited to where you can go etc.....
in moto gp you can do anything on the bikes that can be done on a "real" bike, yet you call it arcade style? maybe in stunt mode, yes.
so what would you call flying some drag00n (whatever that is)?
as hire a copy of moto gp b4 playing the live version, save your game, return your hired copy, play it on the live and TADA, full version?
or am i just crazy at 8am

So I wonder why noone has made a System Link over IP type system for GBA like Gamespy and/or XboxConnect? I am thinking of getting a GBA:SP when it comes out, it would be kinda neat to be able to play the link games online.

1 - I bought the adapter asap and SOCOM. I use neither anymore.
2 - Twisted Metal Black Online still has not arrived. I am starting to feel scammed. Can anyone check to see if they guarantee 4 to 6 weeks delivery? I want to write a nastygram to Sony.
Capcom VS SNK 2 is the only killer app for the Xbox Live that I can see. I'm very much looking forward to any sort of review of it from an intelligent person like Jason.

you just hook it up to your existing inet connection? doesn't work with a modem i guess, but could (dual) isdn be used?
does it use dedicated game servers or just match making servers? would xbox quake3 be able to join a (free) public (pc)quake3 server?

Battlefield
I haven't heard any news on whether Battlefield 1942 is going to come out on the Xbox still or not. What I have seen is that EA took the Xbox icon off the bottom of the page of the official site. Now I don't know why it would be taking so long for them to release it unless they are trying to put the expansion pack into an all in one package with the original. If you could please find out I know that the Xbox community would be greatful for any news available. Maybe a new update for the site too, that would be great.
Thanks again,
-Nathan
Kaiser H Wangoon Orta says: The sad truth is that Battlefield 1942 is NOT coming to Xbox. EA is not a big supporter of Xbox Live, and Digital Illusions CE was kinda iffy about actually being able to port the game to Xbox. This led to the game getting cancelled. Yes, you can cry now.
