Unreal 2 Site Update

The video, which is available in several formats, shows about a minute and a half of ingame footage. You can find mirrors of the Quicktime and high res MPG versions of the video on Fileshack.

But OMG, who the hell writes the dialog for these games? Opening narration was just terrible. Just watching the dropship with no narration at all would have been way cool, and the voiceover practilly ruins it. "At the edge of human existance!!!" K THX Orson Wells BYE.

Lol, this game more and more looks like a worthless piece of crap. Let me clarify:
Bad low-res textures, laughable monsters that are anything BUT scary, dynamix lights missing here and there, pathetic shadows and that chick that comes straight out off a 1980 game...geez, how disappointing! *vomit*

Personally I'm a litte miffed that there's no chance of anything happening with her in the game. Anyone wonder why no girls play action video games, but they use the hell out of chapt programs and social games like MUSHes to lesser extent things like EQ? Cause there's no relationship stuff going on there, there's virtually no depth to the characters.
That's why I liked Jedi Knight II so much, when I thought Jan got wacked, I was FUCKING pissed off, she was there from the start, since Dark Forces I. I just have a feeling that Aida will be there to be something nice to look at in between missions and she'll squawk in your ear during them, but that's it.
I guess I'll need to wait for Deus Ex II for something with depth.
The coolest graphic stuff coming up is real-time lighting, smooth character motion and physics including facial expersions, etc. And none of that is going to show up in a screenshot.
The other sucky thing is, even when games start looking like Final Fantasy the movie we still wont be impressed because we've already seen it :( We just haven't played it.

Is it just me or does this gun look an awful lot like the shrinkray gun from the E3 DNF video that was released, uh... what, a year ago? (Year and a half)

i think i expected envelope-pushing from unreal2, but i don't see anything like that here. i guess that's ok, but more of the same doesn't get my dollars. it does look pretty, but all 3d games look the same to me these days. i see nothing here worth spending money on, unless it was a bargain priced title.
and i sure don't see where all of the years of development time went...i mean, legend has been working on this since they finished the mission pack for Unreal.

The video is fairly disappointing, and the gameplay does look a bit stale, that said however, I remember playing Unreal and thinking "OMG, THIS IS AWESOME? THAT GUY JUST GOT DIEDED BEHIND THAT DOOR N' SHIZZLE?!", then 4 levels in going "*yawn*". However, after persevering for a few more levels, it became an excellent single player game with some really good level design and a really good feel. So who knows what the hell to expect from this game. It wont be ugly, it'll have high sys reqs, it might have an annoying overtly sexualised fat virgin nerd male fantasy female character, but there's also a good opportunity it'll be a very fun single player experience.
I think we should withhold judgement until a demo comes out, I'm giving Epic the benefit of the doubt and hoping there's more to the game than meets the eye from those few screenshots/rather cliche 'gameplay' mpg. After all, the original Unreal was pretty good once you really got into it (especially some of the massive enemies).
Here's hoping that they haven't gone 'lowest common denominator", I need a great fresh SP FPS again, I've finished NOLF2 too many times now :(

Since I played it I’ll give you guys some quick impressions. It was all scripted stuff just like half life, but of course with a much much better engine. :) The default CAR is accurate as hell, even over a good distance thankfully and the alt fire is actually useful. The Izarian shock lances kinda suck compared to the CAR as far as I’m concerned. The grenade launcher is very cool and very useful. A lot of reviews say that the levels have more detail than UT2003, but I didn’t see it. The levels looked nice and all, but they didn’t really have things like individually modeled stones in the wall like in Curse-3, or bits of needless polygon crap stuck all over the place like that one all shiny metal CTF level, with those little spokes all over the pillars, you know?
Anyway, I’m definitely going to get this when it comes out. I’m just worried that it will wind up being a lot like Max Payne. A good single player game with little to no replay value that I beat in less than 10 hours, and without multiplayer, I just dunno how long U2 will reside on my drive after I beat it. :P

I have to say I am a little disappointed in the storyline and the art direction in the game. In Unreal, I enjoyed the "ancient" feeling of the world I was in. In levels like Sunspire, Na Pali Haven, and Nali Castle, it felt as if I was going through areas that were much older and much bigger than myself. Unreal II looks like the same old re-hashed environments and story. Almost a Halo clone it seems.

The graphics don't turn my crank like those preliminary screenshots we all saw.
I will not be buying or trying this game. Sorry....next....
I'm sadly not impressed.
I mean, it looks like the original unreal with higher res textures and higher poly models.
One of the reasons I preferred Quake3 graphics over UT graphics was that UT was just WAAAY to flashy (Unreal had this also). It appealed to the newbs but I just felt... Saturated.
The problem is that these graphics are just as flashy. Same purple flashes, same lame 1970's sci-fi-show-purple flashes. It WAS impressive for awhile back in, say, 1998, but using the same techniques to impress people today (lots of additively blended sprites in bright colors) just makes the game look dated.
They should spend time on lighting and shadowing, and architecture. Not just upping the texture sizes and poly-counts. You can barely tell the difference anyway with all those purple flashes in your face all the time.
It's cool if it's once in a while, like some of your weapons give a subtle flash here and there but most if it is just moderate (see: Halo).
So sad. I really hope the gameplay can outweigh the graphics.

sigh.. these days, for a FPS to impress people, it must be profoundly and phenomenally kickass, people must feel morally obligated to want the game, anything less and people just don't care. We've simply seen too much of these games already.

My only complaint is the token T&A chick. Jesus christ, is it that hard to give everyone a a standard fucking uniform if they're on a ship? Meh, and she looks like a down syndrome-suffering table dancer or something.
But yea, I'm buying it.
