making bigger, clearer textures will not take away from gameplay, only make it better..."
Wow if only it was that easy. You think the artists on DX2 don't know how to make larger textures? Maybe their version of Photoshop doesn't let them make textures over 256x256.
The texture limits are most likely set by the programmers because they are the ones managing the memory limits of the game. They (Ionstorm) also have a target system arranged with the publisher in their contract. That number is derived from marketing studies on what audience they want to reach and sell to. It probably isn't a hard core audience that have 128mb video cards, I would guess more like 64mb.
The programmers might also be setting lower limits regardless of the vid cards because of multipass shaders are being used - like bump mapping or detail maps. Maybe frame rate is more important to them in an area that has a lot of dynamic lighting effects. Each time you run another pass on a texture it increases the memory allocated for texture by itself. So a 256x256 texture with a bump map is equivalent to a single pass 512x512. Not including the bump map itself which is probably being re-reference from another texture, which adds to memory.
Having said that though, I can see what some are saying about the textures being low-res. In the shot with the wood floor - the column on the left is so close to the camera that detail textures would have kicked in. I'm guessing they aren't enabled yet. Some of these shots even appeared cropped from larger captures - like the one of the fat man.

Not everyone can appreciate the greatness that is Deus Ex. We'll let them spank it to rehash FPS's whose dev's spent 95 percent of the dev process on making a game that looks good in screenshots so they can fuck you like a one night stand on release with a 10 hour game that is paper thin and doesn't bother to give you a reach around :p

That fat guy is a total lamer. omg, why can't us fat dudes get a break in games? I'm so disappointed in the general stereotype of fat guys.. Why can't they portray us like we are?

looks nice, but its no Doom III.
and no matter how many effects they use, they cant mask those horrible textures. come on! we have video cards with 128MB now damnit!

At E3, they had I think 8 hexagonal slots going down the side of the screen that were used for augmentations, but they weren't supposed to be used in the exact same way... the guy who was showing me the game said that there's a reason they were being displayed like that. I hope that they didn't change that, cause it sounded pretty cool.

In my opinion, Deus Ex 2 should be centered around the following themes:
1. Cyberpunk
2. Dystopian Future
3. Conspiracy Theories
4. Paranoia
5. Espionage
From what I hear, Deus Ex 2 will lack the paranoid, conspiracy thing. That is a bad decision!

sweet. please let this live up to my expectations.
Are we entering an era of high-contrast rusty bumpyness? This and Doom look great, and I'm sure I'll like them as much as the next guy - but these rusty metal grates are going to get old fast.
