Vaporware List 2002
by Maarten Goldstein, Jan 02, 2003 1:19pm PSTWired.com has once again posted their annual list of products that we have been waiting on for oh so long, the so called vaporware products. Once again Duke Nukem Forever takes top honors, while Valve's Team Fortress 2 takes #3 ('It will be released "shortly," Valve promises'). Also on the list are the games Shadowbane and Master of Orion 3, along with Mac/Linux ports of Neverwinter Nights.

I'll be happy when CS dies too.
BF1942 is what Tribes wanted to be, but without the goofy jumping like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
DNF will have its day, but all team-based online shooters are crap compared to 1942. Give it 3 years of polish like the CS team has had, and it will be a monster.

Not until they actually show us something from the game besides a couple of screenshots.
My list of things I'd like to see (no new ideas here):
1.Balanced multiplayer with good network code. does not have to have BF1942 style vehicles...
2. Fast paced ( but not insane. see quake1/3. 2 was a tad slow except for CTF)
3. Will someone ever bring back the grappling hook?
4. Real fight locations. Casinos, super markets, gas stations, brothel, whatever. Go to Vegas and do that :)
5. Keep Duke personality intact
6. Fuck the sensors. Go all out for this one.
7. Do not waste your time with Co-OP, thats whats mutiplayer is for.
8. I want ALOT of enemies and I want a chain-gun done right (quake2 style or something).
I have a feeling you already have all of those in so onto the stuff you might now:
1. Random enemies for each level. I want some unexpected stuff to happen.
2. Do something with the police. ie Duke gets drunk and ends up in Jail. Terminator 1 style fighting in Jail. :)
3. Make Duke Visit Hollywood... with all the obvious and not so obvious enemies.
4. Visiting RIAA and kicking some butt would also be nice. :).

I wonder about that. I mean it's a good thing to not release a shitty game. The world doesn't need more shitty games. However, it strikes me that there might be a lack of focus or something like that behind DNF taking so long. I mean, it's not like they are starting from scratch. They have a good main character, solid enemies, and a context.
Then again I have no clue what is going on at 3DR. I just wonder what the changes have been over the years. This game is going to have an interesting post mortem.

It seems to me that this game holds the most promise of the ones mentioned as Vaporware. Valve and TF2 have been undeniably quiet about their projects (TF2 or HL2 or anything other then CS 1.6) but have had some botched projects (Condition Zero) to deal with in the interim. To be on their third dev team does not give me a great deal of hope for their products.
What has 3DRealms done? Well, they've produced Max Payne which was a great game as well released Manhattan Project. While they haven't done a lot, what they have done has been done right (I'm no big fan of side scrollers, but I heard that MP was entertaining for what it was - I never played it). Max Payne was a great game and I am hoping it will be superceded by DNF upon release.
FWIW, I am neither a fanboy nor a DNF obsessive. When the game gets here, I will probably buy it hoping for a great FPS experience - new and innovative things are hard to come by in this genre.
Oh, and kudos to GeorgeB for taking the award with good humor. It shows that 3DR isn't completely hung up on themselves or the fact that DNF is taking forever to get out the door.

George is the head guy and he seems happy but that doesn't seem at all representative to me. He could be some nut for all we know!

I'd like to see 3DR taunt us with a bit more info. It'd be nice. Irregardless I'll be buying the game the day it comes out. Even if only looks like the old E3 demo, I'd still consider it money well spent.

DNF is all about the gameplay and cheesy one-liners. The movie demo 3DR released a long while back at E3 looked pretty solid... graphics looked nice, gameplay looked interesting, and it had the typical Duke "flair." Why start over from there? :/
As long as DNF doesn't use the LithTech engine, I think it'll be fine... it's taking forever, but I think it'll be a good game.

You know back in the day it was a pretty badass graphics system but what's the point now? We might as well get our panties in a bunch over the Commadore 523,744.

Q2 to Unreal. What was the other time? Unreal to a newer version of Unreal?

As a lonely crazed developer in their basement of which this game is their life's work, they could probably get away with this ridiculous development cycle, but as a COMPANY they would have been better off releasing two (in their eyes mediocre, in ours possibly great) games in the time it's taking to make one.
I mean realistically, with the exception of dognose, most of us are going to get this game, play it for a couple of weeks and move on to something else. I'm gonna feel pretty guilty doing that but I am sure I will be one of the few who would actually stop to have that thought.

Serously though...
Unknown to us Blizzard has been working on a Blackthorne FPS based off of the Quake engine. Before Blizzard announced the games existance 3d realms placed a bet with Blizzard that they could keep a game in development longer than they *blizzard* could. So DNF was announced, and blizzard stayed silent, as to not arouse suspicion.
How do I know this? A talking baboon told me after I mixed my drinks too much, and awoke in the City zoo.
The baboon knows all... Fear him...

It shows that they care about what they are doing and want to do a job that is the best that they can do.
More power out to the 3D crew in working hard on trying to make the best game they can and not rush a shitty game out the door just because...
Go 3D Realms! I will buy your product just because of the fact that you are spending time in making the best game you can.

Silence is better than having to tolerate those never ending PR shit like daikatana.
But seriously, TF2 kinda stole the thunder a little bit from TF2. From what I remember TF2 promised great singleplayer experience and maybe Valve's still got some chance on that. ;|

HL's story was slightly weak (accident, aliens invade, kill most people, governement trys to kill everyone to hush it up, you have to save the world/base/your own ass.) There wasnt much else to it, but each plot development was made in such a way you didnt notice you were being told the story :D

In fact, it's probably better that you not deliver any game. That would really take the pressure off all of us. Thanks!
Some of you may remain stubborn until some of your buddies say, "Hey, it rules!" Then you're all over it.
They're gonna bank if/when it gets done.

Have 2 friends waiting on those ports, Bioware has done a really poor job of getting those released and its nice to see they're getting bad press for it. Well deserved.
That game was released way, way too early.
i'll never forgive them for not having a robe graphic for wizards. bastards
