First Post!

by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 22, 2002 9:49am PST

I think we're finally gonna hit that final news slow down as most companies shut down for the week, and sites like PC.IGN and GameSpot wont be updating. Guess I'll finally try to complete either Hitman 2, or No One Lives Forever 2, or Anachronox, or The Thing. Plenty of options for sure. Finally saw The Two Towers last night. Didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first movie, but still very very good. There wasn't anything that I didn't like in the first movie, but this one had a few things that bugged me. Still so much better than most movies though. Movie: Vodka is a luxury we have. Caviar is a luxury we have. Time is not.

It's my favorite CRPG of all time
It's my favorite tactical combat game of all time
It's my favorite war game of all time.

...and it just got rereleased a few months ago by Strategy First in a gold pack that includes: the original JA2 and the expansion pack, Unfinished Business (which includes a map editor), all pre-patched and in one nice package. I know alot of you might not have heard of the game or didn't know it was rereleased, so this is what this post is for.

The game is incredibly deep, incredibly hard to master, and you can play it for years. It's pretty much the only game that has had a permanent place on my HDD since I got it. When I first played it, I didn't like it. I expected a game with basic shallow combat and expansion like its grandaddy x-com. The more and more I played it, the more I realized how fuckin amazing and unique it is. There really is no other game ever for the PC quite like it.

Everyone always talks about persistent worlds these days, this game has a TRULY persistent world. Get in battle in the middle of the jungle in some random sector and come out alive...visit the sector a few days later and all the corpses of fallen soldiers will still be there, rotting with crows picking at them. Your less strong-stomached mercs will comment at how much the sight disturbs them while your calm and collected mercs can use the crows for target practice :)

Take over towns piece by piece and fortify them by training civilians into a defensive militia. Fend off counter-attacks by the dictator queen you have been sent to assassinate. Basically play a chess game in the form of guerilla warfare vs a well-established army that has an entire country in a strangehold. Turn the tide by taking out SAM sites, heli-lifting in and out of sectors, take over key facilities like mines and the hospital, and gain the loyalty of the people. When you take over the airport, you can shop online (www.shackspace.com/~poor_yurik@shackmail.com/shoppingonline.jpg) with your laptop and order all types of equipment. You choose your shipping and handling timeframe/cost etc as well :)

taking over the island, one town at a time: www.shackspace.com/~poor_yurik@shackmail.com/my_holdings_day_12.jpg

Your main fighting force will be a dynamic team that you personally put together by hiring mercs online with your laptop. You can set how long you want them to work for you, you can take out insurance on them, etc. They all have incredibly distinct personalities, traits, and skills. Some love working together, some refuse to even be on the same island together. Then of course you have your own custom-tailored merc that is fully designed by you and serves as either your personal avatar or your right hand man, depending how you think of him :) As you team makes it out of conflicts together, the outcomes of each battle will effect their morale and how well they work together and how they perform as individuals.

Blow down walls with TNT, climb up on a rooftop and snipe a head off, toss tear gas through a window and have gas-mask equiped mercs run in SWAT style, take to the night with silenced weapons and take out huge compounds without the enemy ever knowing you were there, etc etc etc etc.
