Shack GOTY 2002 Poll
by Steve Gibson, Dec 11, 2002 11:09am PSTWell then, we're wrapping up 2002 and it's been one of the better years of gaming in a while. All kinds of fun stuff coming out on all kinds of platforms, and it's been fun to see the game libraries growing for the Gamecube and XBox over the year. Well, now it's time to choose your favorites for 2002.
- Cast your votes for the best games of 2002We broke stuff down into categories, so it may take you a while. You do not have to vote in all categories, if you dont own a particular console or are not interested in a particular genre, dont vote for those games. If your favorite game is missing, then obviously in the infinite wisdom of our staff here, your game sucked or we simply forgot.

Morrowind however, was an incredible immersive experience with a real sense of freedom. I went from a weak nothing, to a master thief, to a stronger fighter, to gathering herbs in the fields and making potions, to taking over a house and decorating it with all my treasure. After this, even such outstanding epics as Baldur's Gate 2 (& ToB) seemed small and linear in comparison. You can literally just pick a direction and start walking, and you'll find something cool to do.
This is assuming that you can really get into RPGs. The vastness of morrowind would probably be a turn-off and a cause of boredom for many, if they couldn't get entirely into it. But if you were fortunate enough to play the entire game and get a lot out of it, well then you know what I mean.

As expected, most of the product was eye-candy with little underneath (Dungeon Siege) or formula yawns (Jedi Knight, RTCW) or high-polygon rethinks of the same old stuff (Neverwinter Nights, UTK3, WC3) or the predictable military cash-ins (take yer pick). The industry is almost devoid of originality; the transformation into "the Hollywood you can click" is nearly complete. In future, look for creative stuff to come from overseas.
But there were nice surprises. Morrowind and, especially, the incredible Arx Fatalis stretched the boundaries of RPG playing. NOLF2 was everything most games aren't: clever, intelligent, hip, fun. And Battlefield 1942 was the most immersive war FPS yet.
A few observations:
-- the hardcore FPS genre has been in constant decline for years. Somebody save it, please. Ritual?
-- all the groundbreaking stuff is happening in immersive worlds dev, a la Morrowind/GTA 3. Over-scripted maze-play is yesterday.
-- recent Doom 3 media hints that id may have got the Q3/TA turd out of its system just in time. But see comments about over-scripted maze-play...
-- nobody in gaming today has quite the funny, and simultaneously embarrassing, presence of Paul Steed. Too bad. Bland and corporate is the new religion. Even Steve Gibson is starting to look and sound like Tom Ridge. ;-)

All i had to vote. Unless Blizzard released another game this year. Dice did a very good job on BF1942. Even with the bugs and the stupid netcode this game is brilliant.

I think there should be an MMORPG category added... :/
How can someone possibly make a decision with this sort of selection?
I move that the games be replaced with hot chickzors in bikinis.

Battlefield 1942 was another one I enjoyed. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I did I really enjoyed it. Not for as long as MoH, because there were just too many flaws in the game for me to truly enjoy it.
