Online Console Gaming 2002
by Maarten Goldstein, Dec 09, 2002 8:15am PSTNot only have the Playstation 2 (Vice City), GameCube (Metroid Prime) and Xbox (Splinter Cell) seen some superb games released during the past month or two, all three consoles can now also go online thanks to hardware released by their manufacturers. In the second part of the Online Console Gaming 2002 series, Jason takes a look at the GameCube online adapters and Phantasy Star Online.
In an attempt to cater to as many gamers as possible, Nintendo offers two choices, either a Broadband Adapter or Modem is available, each costing $35. For your $35 you get the adapter of your choice and that's it. No demo CD, no coupon for a free game, no cash off another game, zero, zilch, nada. And the general impression I got from this package is that I should be glad I got what little I did. Nintendo doesn't seem to be too enthusiastic about getting the GameCube online, and that's totally evident from the lack of any kind of setup CD. The package has a Phantasy Star Online logo on the front, indicating that it's the only game you'll be able to use with it.Read the rest here.

One question I have about PSO is in regards to the quests that unlock GBA games. We know that there are online quests that can do this, but what about any such quests in the offline game? I thought there was mention in the game manual of this, but can't recall.
I'd be surprised if there were any such quests offline, but if so, that would be very cool.

"Console Game of the Evening : I didn't really like generic game vX, whilst I liked version Y a lot better, and version X was really not as good and had nothing going for it, I thought it was worth mentioning anyway".
it's a bit repetitive and overtly negative. How bad is something going to be if it gets an F?

Actually, the one shining jewel of console online gaming seems to be Capcom Versus SNK 2 for the XBox Live. I have sweet arcade controls and a very competitive attitude about that game, but no damned human opponents (very few people play me twice in Street Fighter). I don't have an Xbox, but I would certainly be interested in how that game holds up under lag, and how the matches are organised (a realtime ladder would be pretty damned cool), Jason.
Thanks :-)
