It's so obvious that this game has been fine tuned and tweaked to behave exactly the way it does to make it fun to play and not bother you with being too realistic in it's physics. The article mentions they spent 3.5 years in development - whoa!
There are minor issues with characters walking through cars (clipping) once in while but I could care less because the expansive vistas that you can take in within the missions makes it easy to overlook those little flaws.
Download the demo for some shooting fun and get an idea of how great the graphics are. If the original Half Life single player game is rated a 10, I'd give mafia a 9.8 to compare it with. It's a huge game too, took up about 1.9 gig of HD space.
