BF1942 Patch News
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 29, 2002 8:12am PSTWhen the Battlefield 1942 1.2 patch was released this week, it was reported to be for the North American version of the game only. Not true it seems now as the European patch is completely identical so everyone can download 1.2.

So far my experiences with the patch have been largely negative, though. I (and my clan) belonged to the group of people who thought the game was near perfect as it was. They have no changed a lot of things to the worse, and we might end up reinstalling and going 1.1. Sounds a little naive perhaps, but we play to have fun, and we haven't had a lot of fun with the 1.2 patch so far I'm afraid.
You hit and kill people easier. This also makes for dying easier. A lot of times I never even realize what happened, I spawn and die, I walk out of a building and die, I stick up my head from under the sandbags and I die. This should ofcourse work both ways, and in the end bring some kind of balance where everyone dies just as much, even if it's easier to kill than before. It just hasn't felt like "fun" for the hours I've played with the 1.2 patch.
Shooting down a plane now only takes one second. One second of firing towards the engine at the front and it'll blow up. This gives the hopeless "Why am I even playing?" touch to aerial combat aswell. I liked it when I knew I was being fired at and could pull some evasive action and perhaps turn the tide, now it's just BANG! Oh, I died.
Tanks were balanced well, their offensive power was way greater than that of an infantry, but thanks to grenades being well balanced and powerful you could stop a tank if you were just good at placing those grens. As it is now, see a tank and you can just run, because there's little you can do. See a tiger and you might aswell push the 'sucide button' to get it over with.
I can say I haven't put into more than 4-5 hours of play with the new patch yet, so maybe there is still room for changing my mind. This is however how I feel about the new patch right now. I hope I change my mind.

- tanks have more hitpoints and are more resistant against grenades: GOOD
- guns more accurate via netcode: GOOD
- machine guns doing more damage: BAD
- planes going down faster: not a pilot, but I say prob BAD
- new optimizations to make graphics faster: GOOD
- hit feedback: GOOD
Summary
I'm in favor of the 1.1 "feel" but I do like the graphics changes and the tank changes.

I have no idea why, though, as EA has said "Finally, EA Europe has released the version 1.2 patch (direct FTP link) for European editions of Battlefield 1942, and it turns out that reports that yesterday's North American patch will work on the European version of the game are accurate, as both patches are identical. "
