GeForce FX Announced
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 18, 2002 9:17am PSTThe NDA has been lifted, the NVidia GeForce FX has officially been announced. You can find articles on HardOCP, AnandTech, FiringSquad, Guru of 3D, Bjorn3D, Hexus and Beyond 3D and there are various press releases on nvidia.com. Some of the features: 1Ghz DDR-2 memory, 64-bit and 128-bit floating point color, 128 bit memory bus width, and of course it supports DirectX 9. Of course what we care about is benchmark numbers, and we'll have to wait a while for that. But rumor has it it's going to be pretty damn fast.
"Computer games today are fast and exciting, yet they still lack the ability to engage us emotionally," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO at NVIDIA. "With the GeForce FX GPU, game developers now have the power to create awe-inspiring visuals and bring character emotion to life. GeForce FX enables a new type of interactive expression we call cinematic computing." "The NVIDIA GeForce FX GPU is the result of ten years of passionate effort by the best 3D graphics engineers in the business and includes technologies invented at NVIDIA and 3dfx," Huang continued. "The GeForce FX GPU delivers unprecedented 3D graphics performance and the NVIDIA Unified Driver Architecture ensures the reliability and quality that has become the hallmark of NVIDIA GPUs." ...

Seems like every time I buy a good VidCard, I end up adding 20db to the case from all the fans I install to keep the suckers cool...

Did you also catch that the high end (2 slot cooling) NV30 will retail for around $500 and that's the one with the supposed 500 mhz core? Basically the doom numbers come from this version and according to the graph on anand's site, it only has a 13 fps advantage over the R9700 and anand also adds this little tidbit:
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as pricing goes, you can expect the fastest GeForce FX to be more expensive than the Radeon 9700 Pro. The real question is how much the "single slot" version will go for and how it will stack up to the Radeon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By february I anticipate a price drop for the R9700 to around ~$250 or less online and maybe $320 retail (only a logical guess). If my latter assumption is right, then paying 2x the price for 13 fps seems a bit ridiculous. And we've yet to see how well the 1 slot lower clocked version of the NV30 does against the R9700.
I don't want to sound like a fanboy because I am not. I'm still waiting on benchmarks to see how well NV30 does but so far I'm not very impressed. I am really hoping NV30 can pull off a >50% gain in most games compared to the R9700 but somehow I think that'll be far from reality.

Maybe my next video card will be back to Nvidia, but I'm in no rush. Maybe in a year or so.

"NVIDIA has hinted at offering another version of the GeForce FX at a lower clock speed that would only occupy a single slot cutout, but we will have to wait until the product line is announced before we can find out what the differences will be. Our initial guess would indicate that a simple reduction in clock speed would be enough to go with a more conventional cooling setup."
So it is huge lengthwise, and takes up two slots. I guess it is not too big a deal, but I was not expecting this.

This is a bunch of BS. Real time 3D used in games is still lightyears away from anything in either of those movies. The new card is fast, but nothing is fast enough to bring cinema quality graphics to your games. One frame of animation takes several HOURS to render and animation has 30 frames per second!
I will reserve my final opinion until I see some benchmarks.
SOBEONE Out!

What?! You mean mass murder in tomorrow's games will engage us emotionally on a deeper level than mass murder in today's games?

Perhaps by this time we will see 2800+ CPUs, though. Although I doubt it.

I am still trying to figure out why they have posted that particular image in the "demo" section of the new FX card... aint anything pretty or impressive from my point of vue.
If there's something particular I'm missing from the image, please let me know.

"NVIDIA makes up their performance advantages in their memory architecture, higher core clock speeds and overall efficiency."
same 8 pixel pipeline as radeon
this is bad news for Nvidia...ATI will have a Radeion9700 pro ULTRA something with higher clock speeds in the future when they move to .13u

I would like to be able to upgrade mobo and cpu only...hoping it would fit into the stupid compaq case=/ and keep all the other crap hdd, dvd, floppy, cables etc.. and make this swap as painless as possible..
then I lose my preloaded version of xp because compaq only gives a fucking recovery disk and no xp copy, whatever, that's what I get for being cheap and lazy and going into best buy in the first place=/
