Raven Shield Demo Released
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 14, 2002 7:14am PSTAs promised, Ubi Soft has released the multiplayer demo of Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, through it's Japanese branch no less (thanks Factornews). The demo includes two levels playable in survival or team survival mode. It's a 155mb download.

I'm using XP Pro. Graphics card is a GF4 Ti4400 using 28.83 drivers, UT2003 and other Unreal engine powered games run just fine, aswell as all other games I have installed. Installation of Raven Shield went fine, saw the Splinter Cell preview movie just fine, but starting the game up did not. My monitor turns black and acts like it is trying to find sync, but is unable to. It is switching back and forth between resolutions every 3-4 seconds. In the background I hear music. This goes on until I press ctrl+alt+del, upon which I get the above message in a window. I can reproduce this.
Any clues?

Graphics: finally! guns/player hands/models ...sweeet.
Lighting: where the hell is the dynamic lighting from muzzle flash??!?! is that not realistic or something?
Gameplay: only ran around in LAN so I cant say much
Sound: it was good...not spectacular.

Mostly it seemed to have horrible 'net code. Even with a ping time in the sub-100 range I was still seeing a godawful amount of lag. Try to get into a firefight? HaHa. That is a joke when the enemy is in front of you one second and behind you the next because there is no client side prediction and he just "popped" from once place to the other.
I'll have to pass on this one. A shame, I thought that using the Unreal tech would mean this one would be a solid winner all around.

The look of the game is very nice. The models are well detailed, the world maps look nice and the guns seem pretty sweet to me. There is a very cool physics engine in the game. When you shoot someone on the stairs, they fall all the way down, when you shoot someone in the gut, the topple over. Its pretty darn cool.
The sounds are also moderately well done. When a person is far off and using a sniped gun, you just fall over dead without hearing anything. I think they need to make more zings and pops from bullet holes though.
The movement seems very realistic, but its TOO realistic. When you sidestep and walk backwards, its feels jittery but only because each step is registering movement. Picture, step, stop, step, stop. It can be very annoying. You can also crouch, lay prone (which only seemed to work sometimes) and run endlessly. There is no stamina meter or anything...
There are lots of guns to choose from in the game and lots of grenades as well. I messed with the MP5, P90 and M16 but theres many more in this demo. You can change your guns burst rate which I seemed to have always selected single fire. The recoil seems a bit insane on a lot of guns, like an old woman is handling them. The flashbang and gas grenade have very interesting effects that I haven't seen before.
The UI of the game seems pretty nice too. Its set up in a Ghost Recon fashion where you select guns before the round and hit ready when you are all set, and then the round starts. Map change times seem non-existant and I'm not really sure why that is. One minute we'll be playing a map, and then the round changes and we are in a different map with no load times.
All in all, this is a pretty well done demo and made me a bit more excited for the real game.

FUN GAME
RegServerRcv_RegisterServerResult failed, reason = 4
I tried going back to the old server.ini settings, but nothing worked. I take it this error has something to do with the server not registering correctly -- anyone else have this problem? Any workarounds?

Also, can you see your weapons in this game? One thing I couldn’t stand about all those Rainbow 6 type games is that you couldn’t see your gun. For a series of games that was trying to be ultra realistic, the whole invisible gun routine kind of broke the immersion for me.
Hopefully they’ve scaled back the ‘realism’ just a little, cause the graphics do look awfully good.

4) I can't connect to half the servers for some reason (other games work fine, so it's not my problem)
5) Gun bug: Switch to something else, then try to switch back to your gun. You won't be able to!!! How did this get through Q&A? I know I'm not the only one w/ this.
6) DX Sound errors, all the time
7) If you die while zoomed in, you'll have the scope-sight thing, even after you die

Every location on the mirror list has like a wait of 30-40 mins, so i click one that is 39... the window pops up with the avg wait time of 44 mins... 15 mins later my download is ready, what the fuck... of course I was afk cuz i figured, 40 mins, wtf, then i come back and the link expired...
