Late Night Consoling
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 13, 2002 8:30pm PSTSince I don't really like to break traditions, there won't be a Late Night Consoling tomorrow night (OK who am I kidding, it's the perfect way to give myself a break). Just pretend that I'll be out drinking. We'll run Jason's PS2 online article though, so you'll still have some console goodness. Look for that article in the morning.
| Ura Zelda ReleaseLooks like gamers in Japan are in for a treat when the GameCube game Legend of Zelda: Kaze no Takuto is released there, as not only will a pre-order bonus disc contain Ocarina of Time, it will also include Ura Zelda. For those not familiar with this game (look at me, pretending I know what I'm talking about), Ura Zelda was going to be a Nintendo 64 Disk Drive game, but due to the early demise of that peripheral, it was never released. There's no word as of yet if U.S. gamers are getting this special disc as well. More information can be found at IGN. | |
| | Splinter Cell GoldUbi Soft has announced that Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, one of the most anticipated Xbox games of this holiday season, has gone gold. The game will ship November 18. In related news, Planet Xbox mentions that the Crystal Method song "Name of the Game" will be Splinter Cell's theme song. |
| Metroid Prime ConferenceYesterday recap of the Metroid Prime videoconference press event at Nintendo by IGN was pretty brief, GameSpy now has a lengthier article. More quotes from Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Retro's Steve Barcia about the succesful transition of the franchise to the 3D world. | |
| | Dragon Quest Music BoxFrom Games Are Fun comes news about a Dragon Quest CD set set for release in Japan, containing over 140 (!) tracks from Dragon Quest I through Dragon Quest VII, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It will be released in Japan January 22. Still no news about a new game though. |
| | ICO Team To Show SomethingICO Sequel To Be Shown? is IGN's vague story about the possibility of an ICO sequel being shown at the upcoming PlayStation Party event in December. The team behind the game revealed in the latest Famitsu that they might be showing something at the event, though it was also said that ICO sequel talk might be premature. |
| | Square and Capcom FinancialsWith the Final Fantasy movie debacle behind them now, Square is returning to the black. Sales of Final Fantasy X in Europe and Kingdom Hearts in North America helped the company become profitable again, after initial expectations that they would post another loss. Capcom is also doing well, helped by the Resident Evil games on the GameCube and Steel Battalion for the Xbox. Sales are expected to increase 34% vs an earlier 24% estimate. |

Best explosions ever!
Blowing the crap out of towns is just too much fun.
Squishing infantry and kicking over tanks is great fun.
Sound is awesome in a 5.1 setup.
Multiplayer on live is great fun. Lots of "wow!" moments like:
Cresting a ridge and watching a chain explosion as mech after mech goes up in a firey ball of death.
Collapsing a skyscraper on a smaller mech which was using the building for cover.
Absolutely lag free play!
Must buy for all Xbox owners!

On the other hand, I purchased the GC Resident Evil remake and Eternal Darkness about 6 weeks ago, and I promised myself that I would play and beat RE before I started on Eternal Darkness.
But... is it just me or is Resident Evil not very fun to play? The fact that I have the urge to reload my game every time I accidentally run into a zombie, therefore wasting a dagger, or the fact that I can only save a certain # of times, and only at certain places, and the limiting inventory spaces, all which simply pisses me off. bad.
You guys tell me -- shall I keep at it, thinking it will get better, or should I just move on to Eternal Darkness? Please help me decide!
I still have Super Mario Sunshine, Star Fox Adventures, Monkey Ball 2, Animal Crossing to purchase. So many games, so little time. And now Metroid Prime is coming out... sigh.

splinter cell demo
looks great, plays ok, sounds great. the camera control really really irritated me. i follow the mario 3rd person camera control philosophy. the right stick should move the camera, which moves around the player. splinter cell is completely backwards from what i'm used to. the camera controls like a non-inverted fps, and baby pup cries. i felt like i had cerebral palsy trying to look around. another problem i had was trying to stealth open doors. i must not know how to do it, because it was virtually impossible. the last problem i had kind of relates to the stealth door thing, and that's with the interact controls. they just wouldn't cooperate. other than that, it was cool. lots of ways to go, lots of methods to try, great graphics, etc. if the camera controls were configurable (hopefull they will be in the full game), and i had a manual, i'd be all over this game. looking forward to the full version.
panzer dragoon orta
looks good, plays ok, sounds like shit. seriously, the music is absolute ass. it sounds like bad snes music. i don't know, i've never been a huge fan of the rail shooter outside of rez and an old arcade game called starblade, so this game doesn't really do a whole lot for me. i'm sure with a better soundtrack, i'd be a little more forgiving, but damn. i'll probably rent this one.

"Dead or Alive, the fighting game is dead. Long live the king -- DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball. This game is grade 1, digital narcotic bliss. It's an absolute joyous blast of a game. Surprised? I was..."

"But MOM! I can't eat that! It could be Pit!!"
Why was he "Pit" and not "Kid Icarus" anyways? The game was the hardest thing in the world for me until my little n00b mind figured out what the password they gave you after you died was for.
