First Post!

by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 12, 2002 8:02am PST

So a while ago my CDRW died as I mentioned here and now it seems the CD part of my DVD-ROM is becoming really damn slow. I was installing Hitman 2 earlier and it took almost an hour for a single CD. I have no idea what's up but I'll have to see if I have any spare drives as I'm not looking forward to the 3 CD install of Unreal Tournament 2003. Didn't change any settings either, though the drive is a few years old and from Creative. Oh well. Gotta appreciate the fact that when you tell UPS there will be someone at home in the morning, they show up 1pm. Thanks for waking me up. At least I managed to sleep a few more hours. Movie: I once asked this literary agent what writing paid the best, and he said "ransom notes"

  • Continuing this post: http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=5960436 from yesterday in regards to Dolby Headphone...

It appears that songs played with the Dolby Headphone plug-in are best heard with a flat response and NO equalization whatsoever otherwise the increase/decrease in hertz dilutes the overall effect. Testing it with tracks from Thievery Corporation's "The Mirror Conspiracy" revealed most vocals are spatially centered and instruments perfectly fill in those "blind spots" regular stereo generates. Comparing it to QSound leaves the impression that the developers focused less on a reverb/hall sound which expands the audio in an awkward frequency range or removed the virtual center channel created by left/right channels and instead gave the surround sound a distinct central and closer feel. Even the DH3 Hall setting sounds like you're right in the very middle of the hall and not in the far right corner with part of your body beside a wall like the QSound effect creates.

I guess once someone implements it into popular players like Winamp the public acceptance will grow, but I think in its current stages Dolby has a winner with this effect.
