BMX not so XXX
by Steve Gibson, Nov 04, 2002 8:01am PSTA couple weeks ago we carried a story about how videogames are held to a different standard of content when it comes to violence and sexual content as compared to books and movies, with BMX XXX from Acclaim being the recent example case. Well, for some follow-up for you guys Acclaim who seemed oh so hot and bothered to fight the good fight has caved in and removed the nudity from the game. Here's the bit from the PR:
... today announced that its eagerly anticipated release, BMX XXX, will launch on November 15 for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Only this version of the game has been edited to eliminate the topless nudity.I assume they will be renaming the game BMX PG or something before release?

Are games held up to a higher standard than books/movies? Yes. Should they be? Yes. Why? Because games are interactive. Thus, they are more powerful than books or movies ever can be. You are acting something out instead of just idly watching/reading it.
Games will always be held to a higher standard and they should be. How much of a higher standard is up to debate...
And now is nothing. Just imagine how the shit will hit the fan when games have photorealistic graphics.

We can speculate all we want as to why they did this, but I'd like to hear it straight from the horse's mouth. Doubt we will ever hear anything, but nonetheless, and I honestly could care less about the game itself, but it would be nice to know why they did this.

But of course when there's nudity involved, the words "blood code" take on a new meaning.

I'm still not buying this game for my children.
I'm more worried about them jumping their bicycles.

Acclaim is being a group of punk bitches. They should have kept the nudity in the game. Not because I like seeing b00bies, but because they made a statement about how videogames are held to different standards than movies and TV.

Oh wait, the video game industryt is held to totally different standards than the movie industry. Why? Cause everyone knows that children don't watch movies, they only play video games.
