AMD Market Share Drops
by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 31, 2002 8:17am PSTThis story on The Inquirer has some bad news about AMD, their market share has dropped to the lowest point in four years. While AMD managed to get a 20% marketshare before, they have now tumbled back to around 11.6%. Hopefully the Hammer introduction next year will help AMD.

I figured they woulda had at least a 40% marketshare
Yup, the Thunderbird core is about done, now it's Hammer time.
Who are we kidding.... It's all about the OEM deals.

Isn't the Opteron / Hammer / 64bit CPU supposed to be aimed at the Corporate / Enterprise market? Undoubtedly, it will run 32bit instructions very well, but the cost and availability could be an issue. Moreover, I think I remember reading somewhere that the PGA is twice that of current Athlons; if so, an Enermax 550W might be needed.......
i sure hope this doesn't affect them too much =(
I'm just hoping NVidia doesn't do the same.

They're still a good company with a solid product. Hopefully that'll be enough.
I built Intel systems for years and decided last time to build an AMD system. It was *easily* the easiest and most stable system I've ever built. Really, really nice.
I would be hard pressed to leave AMD. Really happy customer!
Amd got a lot of support in the past from overclockers, gamers etc..., but lately it just doesn't seem worth the prices to go to amd, and the fact that VIA sucks isn't helping them much either. I personally use SIS chipsets now with AMD, and I'm glad to no longer be spending my hours trolling forums looking for sound-loop fixes and such. Nowadays I spend my time gaming rather than tweaking/optimizing/fixing my AMD system. P4's are just rock solid. Just my 2 cents of course. Fire away.

I guess a lot of it has to do with the success of the Northwood, and AMD might have bet too much on consumer loyalty...
