Late Night Consoling

So I just returned from Nintendo's Metroid wrap party here in NYC. It was mostly a social event, and a good one at that, but I did get to do more than admire the Samus ice sculpture and fine booze. Metroid Prime is still the same game it was at E3 -- very pretty, with a control scheme that will definitely take some getting used to. I didn't play enough of it, since I really want to be able to sit down and take it all in at once, but everything I see looks encouraging, and it's still at the top of my most wanted list for the season. There were other games on display, although sadly missing was Metroid Fusion, which is my #2 game of late (especially since completing one opens the original Metroid in the other). Still, I did check out Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, which is looking great, as well as 007: Nightfire which is looking like a solid console FPS. I did ask a Nintendo rep about the untranslatable Zelda title, and unfortunately they haven't heard anything yet, and officially it's still just The Legend of Zelda in this country.

GameCube Xbox Nintendo, Microsoft Battling for Second This is pretty much what everyone's been saying all along, but regardless, another independent analyst has said that Nintendo and Microsoft will be battling it out for second place this year. The report points out that Microsoft has great sales here but lousy ones overseas, while Nintendo has been solid but not spectacular all around, making for a real showdown.
Xbox Unreal Championship Preview A new preview of Unreal Championship is up at GameSpot tonight. The preview provides plenty of details about this Xbox Live launch title, although I must say that even though I've pre-ordered this one, I'm still not totally sure how it differs from Unreal Tournament 2003 (enough so where I'm starting to consider picking up Mech Assault instead, despite my E3 preference for UC).
GameCube Zelda Media Cube.IGN has posted a slew of new media from The Legend of Zelda: <untranslatable>. There are lots of new screenshots and five gameplay movies, all showing off that love-it-or-hate-it cel-shaded style.
Xbox Microsoft Signs Micro Forte Microsoft has announced that they have signed Fallout Tactics developer Micro Forte to develop an exclusive online Xbox game using their Big World: Citizen Zero technology.
GameCube PS2 Xbox Sega Restructures It doesn't sound like there's any negative implications by the decision, but Sega has announced that they have restructured their game development studios so that major production decisions are now made more centrally. Previously all the design studios operated more or less independently, so this is probably a good thing in the long run.
PS2 FF X-2 Previews More Final Fantasy X-2 news...IGN has posted a new preview which basically summarizes everything that's known about the game, and includes the teaser movie split into two parts. For the whole thing, head over to GameForms, where they have posted it as a single MPEG file as part of their updated preview of the game.
GameBoy Advance AGB Becomes Pocketeers Pocket.IGN is reporting that AGB Games, the developers of the impressive 3D GBA engine we've seen so much of over the last few months, has changed its name to Pocketeers. To go along with that report, they have also posted some new screenshots from the engine, which is looking better all the time (hopefully we'll see an actual game soon that uses the technology).
Xbox Indy Preview Xbox.IGN has posted their hands-on impressions of Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, the upcoming Indy adventure from those Buffy developers at The Collective.
GameCube Flippers Everywhere ATI announced today with no small amount of pride that they have shipped 12 million of their Flipper chips which power the GameCube.
Console Game of the Evening: Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the N64. This is hardly a great game, in fact it's a pretty shoddy one, but I must admit, at the time I thought it was decent.
