Mature Rated Games & Shelves

Well here is something to ponder for the day. The guys at Acclaim recently found out that a few major chains have decided to not carry their upcoming BMX XXX title game due to the 'mature content' of it. Which is kinda odd as these are the same stores carrying rated R movies and in some cases porno mags. Acclaim has put out a response:

"We believe that there is a general, unfair characterization of the interactive entertainment industry and as a result, our product is being held to an entirely different standard than other entertainment media with comparable content, including movies, television and radio," said Greg Fischbach, Co-Chairman and CEO of Acclaim. "According to NPD's August report, more than 60 percent of all next-generation hardware owners are men over the age of 18, and this combined with the fact that last year's number one selling game was mature rated, fully supports our belief in the demand for this type of content."
Now obviously Acclaim loves the publicity and they hope this only benefits them to raise awareness of their title and will milk this for what it is worth. However beyond the whole PR whoring thing there is an interesting point being made. What really is the huge difference between a mature rated movie and a mature rated game? You can check out the BMX XXX trailer on Fileshack btw.

  • You know what, I totally agree with the retailers who chose not to stock up on the game. Sure, some of them might sell porno mags... and what's your point? Do they stock porno mags in the same aisle as Harry Potter? Hell no.

Think about it, this game would be stocked next to Mario's and Final Fantasy's... I think it wouldn't be a problem if they had an "adults only" aisle for video games, but they don't.

I sure wouldn't want my little brother or my son to go buy "The Little Engine that Could," and come back asking me what the word "Penthouse" means.
