Well would you look at this, ask and you shall receive. The playable demo of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 has just been handed to us to distribute on Fileshack by the folks at EA. It seems that early votes on the PS2 version are going well.

Need for Speed (NFS) is back and faster than ever in Need For Speed™ Hot Pursuit 2! Engage in the next generation thrill of arcade racing with the spiritual successor to the highly acclaimed, award winning Need For Speed III Hot Pursuit.
Of the dozens of racing games that have come out for PC I think I've only enjoyed like 4 of them. I havent really been able to figure out my tastes in these things so its like always a crap shoot. I know 2 of them have been NFS titles though.

  • Mini Review/Rant.

Why do they miss obvious things like saving your options. Reseting them every time is just a waste of time and a huge oversight.

    Physics:
You'd expected much better physics, the way the Jeep reacts to the terrain in BF1942 is more enjoyable than this, and it shouldn't be. A Jeep with a 60mph top speed should not be more fun to drive than a Porsche with a 197mph top speed in a racing game. Maybe i'm just expecting the cars to react like Grand Turismo 3 or even Grand Theft Auto 3. As it is it feels like your a sliding hockey puck bouncing off the boards when you crash. Maybe it's the same code from NHL2003 that models the puck behaviour.

    AI/Gameplay:
The AI is horrible, your competitors don't even drive the line nor at full throttle. The cops will ignore the other dirvers and chase after you even if you are clearly behind and others have passed them. They like to hold out just for you. I'd say the cop AI is inferior to previous versions of this game. It's annoying that the cops are able to corner better than you with the same car. They have magical sticky tires or something. Not to mention the voices aren't even consistent. You'll have one guy say he's breaking off pursuit, then the next cop down the road who starts pursuit has the same voice? wtf they have severall voices for the cops why not mix it up. That's just weak IMO, and totally breaks off any immersion you feel when you're dodging yellow smoke speweing explosive barrels and cop cars that seem to corner on rails yet when you hit them it's like running into a train. Hey maybe the cops got accidently coded to be trains instead of 911's. Maybe you can configure the track and opponent settings in the full version, but you cannot in the demo. Just another feature absent from this bare-bones title. There's only one track provided in the demo, with only one configuration of it. The full version only has 4 tracks. Each with 3 different configurations. That's weak, those tracks will become old so fast. It'd like to see 20+ tracks, or 15+ and a track-editor/builder (not necessarily 3 configs on each, but it'd rather a new track over a different config). The biggest shortfall in a racing game is the lack of tracks. This so much more important than number vehicles to choose. Often times many cars are just ecplised by the better ones, and there's no reason to drive them other than for novelty. Time would be better spent buliding more tracks to race on.

    Graphics:
One word: dated. Granted the car models and their lighting are a little bit better than NFS5: PU. But not much, everything else is the same. The environments are stale and they have a very boxed-in feel and you can picture imaginary "boards" around the edges of the tracks. The entire graphics engine looks no different than NFS3 really. Beyond the increased poly-count on the cars, and mildly more detailed textures. Those textures really need more detail, they definitely need a "very high" detail setting.

    Overall Impression:
teh suck. I don't forsee any significant re-playability considering the AI is flat and boring, and there are very few tracks. Unless the MP aspect does something innovative, but I suspect that will be a let down as well. The concept for this game has potential but it's very poorly executed, and the dated graphics don't help. It's fun for a bit, but gets old quick. GG EA.
