Battlefield 1942 v1.2 Info
by Steve Gibson, Oct 12, 2002 9:54am PDTThe Battlefield 1942 official website has a list of issues that they are addressing in the upcoming 1.2 patch. Some small frustrations with the Linux server they are working on (I'm confused, how can Linux be frustrating? We use it on Shack and it's easily the most userfriendly OS ever created.. ok ok stay on topic.. stay on topic...) Here's some of the stuff:
We're balancing what needs to be fixed versus what we can fix promptly. So, some of the things we're looking at fixing: - General Stability - Remote Console - Sound bugs - Map load times - Grenade effectiveness versus tanks - Map editor Cheating We're committed to making BF1942 as cheat-free as possible. Because most of the game calculations are handled on the server, people using cheats are finding it very difficult to profit from them. In fact, watching someone try the Speed Hack is just plain comedic. "C'mon soldier! Fire that gun! FIRE!!! Now...RELOAD!" LOL. In any event... we at EA and DICE will make you this pledge: If you find a cheat, send it to us and we'll do everything in our power to negate its effect in the game. Everyone deserves a fair game, right? As always, you can grab up the multiplayer and singleplayer demos of BF1942 @ Fileshack

Standing side by side we both fired at a wall, allowing the recoil to carry our crosshairs up it. As my crosshair rose, my bullets became more scattered. I noticed my friends went up in a more or less straight line. there was no scatter. However, he saw the exact opposite. His scattered, mine didn't.
Then i enabled the accuracy cheat, and when we repeated the test, my line looked just like his, more or less straight (since he didnt use the cheat, his still looked scatted and mine looked straight).
there was also more or less no scatter while moving and shooting, sure the bullets were spread out at an interval - but their positions were pretty much the same as standing still, just obviously spread out due to moving.
In conclusion, all "inaccuracies" as a result of movement are client side visually only - the correct info is still sent to the server. The accuracy cheats only affect is to accurately show you where your bullets are actually going. It doesn't alter any of the info sent to the server, only the info sent to you.

and people honestly playing the game find it very hard to deal with the horrid prediction and framerate slowdowns from server load.. good job dice!!! I'll take cheating and a punkbuuster/variance any day over the current method, don't be so quick to pat yourselves on the back please.

1) You're an engineer, and you throw an expack. Now you have to right click TWICE to switch to your detonator. This takes about 2-3 seconds, the first time you click your hand goes down (like you're switching to the detbox) but comes back up with another expack in it. Then you have to click again. Totally lame.
2) You're running around and you see a panzerfaust/bazooka sitting on the ground dropped by some schmuck. You pick it up, and it automatically begins to reload. Only, once it's done reloading, it starts to reload again, because the first reload doesn't count. Think about it: when are you MOST LIKELY to pick up an antitank gun off the ground? When there is a tank bearing down on you, of course. You have to wait like 5-6 seconds for the damn thing to reload twice, and all the while you're a sitting duck. Really, really, REALLY stupid.

Looks pretty cool.. the most "mod" I've ever seen for BF1942, seeing as it's not just a model replacement, but has new effects, etc too. Cool thing he went all out with new HUD graphics and everything.

On that topic... a golden moment from a game on the EA servers (Guadalcanal map) last night (which for some reason was full of people making cheating accusations):
1. I follow a Corsair towards the Axis base in my Zero... nibbling away at his plane with gunfire...
2. His plane takes too much damage and loses power and he jumps - deploys 'chute
3. I angle in at him firing away, missing mostly... once I get right on top of him I roll right and tip the right wing down... just barely tapping the poor fellow in the head as he's 5 feet from the ground... "haikeebah [killed] Name-I-Forget"
4. Name-I-Forget guy "HAIK U MODDING BITCH. NICE CHEAT ASDHOLE@!!@!?!"
5. Fly away laughing uncontrollably.
