Late Night Consoling

by jason bergman, Oct 11, 2002 8:30pm PDT

More details on that GBA 2 that UK mag EDGE is reporting on have hit the web, this time over at Gamers.com (where they correctly attribute their source, unlike the last site that tried this). If the magazine is to be believed, not only will this new system be available before the end of the year in both Japan and North America, but supposedly Nintendo is considering offering an upgrade price for those wishing to trade in their original GBA. There's also word that in addition to this uber-GBA, Nintendo is simultaneously testing a minor upgrade that only includes a backlight, suggesting that we may get a backlit GBA this year but the full GBA 2 won't be out for a while yet. I'm skeptical of all of this, but EDGE really is a reputable source, and I'm willing to trust their reporting on the matter. Hopefully we'll have an official announcement of some kind in the near future.

PS2 GTA: Vice City Q&A GameSpot has posted another one of their GTA: Vice City Q&As, this time with art director Aaron Garbut, who talks about designing the environments for the game.
GameBoy Advance More Blizzard GBA Games Revealed Well this didn't take long...mere days after announcing The Lost Vikings and their new Classic Arcade Games GBA label, Blizzard has announced that both Rock n' Roll Racing and Blackthorne are in development as well. Details and screenshots are up at Blizzard's site.
Xbox GameBoy Advance Lord of the Rings Problems If you're one of the unlucky ones who purchased Black Label Games' Lord of the Rings titles for Xbox and GBA and are encountering serious errors, here's a workaround for dealing with them.
PS2 GameBoy Advance Game Delays Sorry RPG fans...both Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Star Ocean 3 have been delayed until 2003. Go pick up The Arc the Lad Collection just in case they're delayed further...that ought to keep you busy for a while.
PS2 Network Biohazard (Resident Evil) Revealed New details from Network Biohazard (Resident Evil) are up at PS2.IGN, taken from the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu. Most of this already ran elsewhere online earlier in the week, but there are new screenshots up at PS2.IGN as well.
Xbox Xbox Bundle Revealed It was already uncovered late last month, but regardless, Microsoft has formally announced their new Xbox bundle, which includes the Controller S, Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT 2002 for the same $200 price. What's most significant about this is that starting Tuesday, this is how all new Xbox consoles will be sold. Microsoft has also said that the Controller S has been outselling the original "by a wide margin" since it went on sale back in April.
GameCube Phantasy Star Online Preview A new hands-on preview of Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II is up at Cube.IGN, complete with a whole ton of new media from the game.
GameBoy Advance New e-Reader Cards Revealed Pocket.IGN has posted images showing off the new NES Series 2 and Animal Crossing cards for the GBA e-Reader.
GameCube PS2 Xbox GameBoy Advance PSOne Tony Hawk 4 Gold Activision has announced that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 has gone gold for all six platforms, and will ship in two weeks. Personally, I think they should stop with the numbering already and switch to years...they just signed Tony Hawk to a deal to make new games for over a decade, so I think this is sort of inevitable (who's going to bother picking up THPS 14?).
GameCube New Zelda Details Computer and Video Games has posted new info from The Legend of Zelda (working title). It turns out those insane looking eyes actually serve some purpose, revealing hidden objects and letting you know if danger is imminent.
PS2 Xbox GameBoy Advance Misc. Screenshots New shots from Shinobi (PS2), Panzer Dragoon Orta and Fatal Frame (Xbox) are up at GameSpot, new shots from Pokemon Advance are up at Computer and Video Games along with some Sega character holiday desktop images (a little early, don't you think?), new shots from Worms Blast (GBA) can be found at Pocket.IGN and Capcom has updated their official Japanese Steel Battalion site with new shots (thanks PlanetXbox).
Console Game of the Evening: Haunted House for the Atari 2600. This wasn't a particularly great game, but for some reason I found myself thinking about it today. Don't ask me why.

  • I hate EDGE! They think they’re so intellectual and high brow, catering for the connoisseurs of the games industry. They can never say a game looks fun, action packed, enjoyable etc. The only way EDGE can express that they like a game is to say it’s intriguing. Every sentence is something like “The most intriguing feature of the game is…” or “This game looks most intriguing and we look forward to learning more…” Never interesting or fascinating though. I think using an adjective other than intriguing is a sackable offence at EDGE.

I stopped reading it many years ago but I still remember some of their gems like crashing in 1080 “results in a frustrating loss of speed.” WTF! So they expect to crash into something and just continue like nothing happened. The magazine was full utterly stupid comments like that.

Then there was the letters page, which was full of letters from EDGE wanna-bes. They used to write in doing their best to sound intellectual and say intriguing just as much as EDGE. Some of the letters used to make me piss myself laughing as much as the content of the magazine did.

I read C&VG now. While there’s hardly any text in the magazine, and the little that’s there is frequently inaccurate, at least the writers aren’t completely full of themselves and the magazine is occasionally funny.

Ah it’s good to see after years of not reading the magazine my hatred still lives on. It pisses me right off to see them being shown respect that they really don’t deserve.

Thanks for letter me get that off my chest :)
