Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Oct 04, 2002 8:30pm PDTSo hopefully everyone enjoyed last night's premiere edition of LNC EX. I think that's a good solution, as I can write it on Wednesday nights, and don't actually have to be home when it goes live. As I mentioned last night, I can't promise I'll do it every week, but I'll certainly give it a shot. There's a lot to get to tonight, so let's jump on it!
| | Yet Another Insane Acclaim Promotion Having already caused people to legally change their name to become walking billboards, Acclaim has moved on to a new promotion over in the UK. To support the PS2 release of Burnout 2, they have offered to pay any speeding tickets consumers get on their way to purchase the game. Naturally, the Department of Transport isn't too thrilled about the idea (thanks Richard Smith for the tip). |
| Nintendo's Insane British Mario Promotion Because apparently people in Britain don't respond to traditional advertising any more, Nintendo has resorted to sponsoring the facial hair of sports commentator Des Lynam to promote the UK release of Super Mario Sunshine. Get a load of these pictures at GameSpot. | |
| StarCraft: Ghost Preview GameSpot has posted a new preview of StarCraft: Ghost, the cool looking third person action game with the dorky name. The preview is pretty brief, but it's a good read if you're curious about what little has been seen from the game. And naturally there's more there for paid subscribers. | |
| Sega's Sales Reports IGN has posted a graph showing Sega's sales figures for the past year across all major consoles. The results are certainly interesting...Sonic Adventure 2 for the GameCube isn't just Sega's best selling title, it's the best selling GameCube game of the year so far. And get a load of the dismal sales figures for Rez, although you have to wonder whose fault that is, since it was impossible to find just weeks after its release. | |
| Square's Financial Status More fun with sales figures...Square's financial status for the year ain't spectacular. Final Fantasy XI in Japan hasn't reached that 200,000 figure needed to break even, despite the company's hopes that it would pass that over the summer (it's at 170,000 copies sold, with 120,000 active accounts). Still, it's not all gloom and doom, since there's been only one US release so far this year, and there are plenty of big titles in the works. | |
| | GTA: Vice City News GameSpot has another GTA: Vice City interview online tonight, this time talking with Alex Horton, the senior animator on the game. In other Vice City news, it's been revealed that the upcoming soundtracks for the game will actually unlock exclusive content in the game, and the IMDB has a list of the voice actors for the game (which includes the always entertaining Luis Guzmán). |
| Microsoft Shuts Down Lik Sang? ZDNet (among others) is reporting that Microsoft has shut down import retailer Lik Sang. If true, it's because Lik Sang recently purchased a company that builds Xbox mod chips. Lik Sang has always been sort of shady, but they've also been a good online resource for importing games. Their official site currently has a message saying they're temporarily off-line, with a form to be notified by e-mail when they come back. | |
| Panzer Dragoon Orta News A new interview with Takayuki Kawagoe of Smilebit is up at GameSpot tonight, talking with him about Panzer Dragoon Saga. On a related note, Sega has announced a Limited Edition version of the game that will be released in Japan, although it's a minimal one at best (and is more of an incentive for pre-ordering the game than anything else). | |
| Sega Previews Two more Sega-related previews can be found at GameSpot this evening...they have a look at Toe Jam & Earl III, as well as a new preview of Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II. Speaking of PSO, apparently in Japan, users of the just-released broadband adapter are having some difficulties. | |
| DOA Xtreme Volleyball Update Eat your heart out WarCraft III...when Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball is released, there will be no less than 5 different limited edition covers. | |
| Xbox 2 Soon? Microsoft's J. Allard made suggestive comments recently that they intend to beat the PlayStation 3 to market with their Xbox 2. Specifically he said, "...they won't get a head start next time. And I'll just leave it at that." | |
| Misc. Screenshots/Media Lots of stuff tonight, most from Sega. GameSpot has new shots from Toe Jam & Earl III and House of the Dead 3 for Xbox, as well as new shots from Shinobi, Space Channel 5 and Breath of Fire V for PS2. They also have a brief preview of Doom II for GBA, which naturally has some new shots as well. Cube.IGN has the box art from Skies of Arcadia Legend and the Sonic Mega Collection for GameCube (what else?). Pocket.IGN has new movies showing off Sonic Advance 2 and Sega Rally for GBA, as well as new shots from Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. And finally, new shots from the Xbox games Jedi Knight II and Steel Battalion are up at their respective official sites (thanks PlanetXbox). |

My prediction is that MS markting comes up with some clever new name for the XBOX, like i dono, the YBOX, naww, jokes are too easy.. maybe the ZBOX, XBOX XP? XBOX 2005, i dono but not XBOX 2 because then it'll be the XBOX 2 vs. the PS3 and i don't think MS's marketing would let that happen.

I might have to buy an X-Box, a TV, and a couch just so I can play TJ&E 3. That game dominated my life in middle school. My bud and I would actually walk to school about half an hour early so we could stop at another friend's house on the way and play TJ&E, Madden '92, or Road Rash before classes.
or would they actually be like... ps2 game disc type things

But...,
I really don't like the idea of having to buy extra stuff in order to unlock what is already on the disc. Seems like a blatant cash-in of some sort. Keep in mind that Vice City, new at EB here in Saskatoon (yes, Saskatoon) will run me $85. :/
But, we'll see how this pans out

Haven't been playing any console stuff lately besides Okage (ok...) and Sega Soccer Slam (fun once you and your friends all get used to it and you can move up beyond easy mode).
