Unreal 2 Not Delayed?

Contradicting their own story from last week, Computer & Video Games is now reporting that Unreal 2 will still be released in 2002 instead of early 2003. In the U.S. that is. Apparently the European release might still be in 2003. Yeah.

Of course, it could be that Infogrames US's release schedule isn't as up to date as its European counter-part, and that in the coming weeks a worldwide date of early 2003 will be revealed. Or it could be that we're: a) barking like rabid dogs up the wrong tree; b) walking down a dead-end road; or c) off with the fairies. We'll have to wait and see.

  • I meant to say in a thread by itself...

I think it's safe to assume that the Unreal 2 Engine is more or less "ready".

The only thing that could hold up something like Unreal 2 itself is the time it takes to develop all of the maps, textures and some of the models specific to Unreal 2. That, and maybe fleshing out the storyline of Unreal 2.

Not sure if the same thing could be said for Duke Nuke'Em Forever.. unless their codebase for the engine is 90%-99% in sync with the engine for Unreal 2, or they're willing to stick with the Unreal 1 engine. It's always very time-consuming to switch engine, especially as new "cool" features are added into newer versions of the engines.

I would say, just stick to it, and get the job done by Christmas 2002 or Christmas 2003.
