Does someone have a tip concerning operation systems? I'm still using Windows 98 because it's fast and doesn't give me a hard time with DOS games, but I'm considering changing to XP, 'cause it looks fancy. Now I'm wondering if my (Windows-) games will actually run faster or slower on XP. Any thoughts?

Athlon 1200. 360 MB, Geforce 2 GTS.

Damn, I just realized that this past Tuesday, the 17th, was my third year anniversary of being with the Shack! I lurked for a few months before that in the Q3Test message group, though. But damn, I can't believe I've had the Shack as a part of my life for three whole years. I know it may sound like ass kissing, but I would like to thank everyone at the Shack, this has been such a wonderful website where I got a lot of help and information, support on off-topic matters, and thousands of laughs. This anniversary alone proves that this is a fun website! Again, thanks Shack!

An observation based on the reaction to Starcraft: Ghost being announced as console only.

The reality of gaming today is that consoles have evolved to the point of being able to compete with PCs graphically and gameplay wise. Because a console is MUCH less expensive than a gaming capable PC, it's only obvious that developers are going to target consoles for games. More consoles = more sales = more money.

The people that complain about console only games are cheating no one but themselves, and all they are doing is missing out on great games.

Now that consoles are down around the price of a decent video card, there's really not much reason to not pick one of the big three up. You're only going to increase your ability to play great games, for not much money.

but then again, that's my opinion, yours may differ.

OK... really need some battlefield1942 help here

I know this is off topic, but my shit just seems pretty much unplayable 85% of the time.

Im running an athlon1800xp, 512ram, geforce4 ti 4600... latest nvidia drives..

the demo seemed fine i thought running at 1024by768 with medium detail...

but full vrsion seems like overkill, its just choppy as fuck, and i cant seem to concentrate on playing... everyone on servers says theirs is fine, but shit my game feels junky. any secret tweaks?

Soooooo....I just got back from a post TOC (technology opprotunities conferance) info session w/ nVIDIA.

It was pretty damn cool. I was interested in their internship program but I found out that when they say they only take sophomores and juniors, they really mean it. I was talking to some CMU students who were interns there last summer, they told me about the classes that were absolutely A MUST before you think about interning at nVIDIA and they're classes i won't be able to take until the fall/spring sophomore year.

anyway, they talked about some cool stuff, and showed some pretty cool demos.
after they got done talking about the company history and they're current line of products (do you know they still ship TNT2s?) they whip out there demo system. its a shiny aluminum case that looks really cool. they didn't tell us the specs but from the boot up i noticed that it was a pretty weak athlon XP (something like 1.3Ghz i believe). It was running a GF4 Ti4600. Of the demos listed here: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=demo_archive they played Bugs, Chameleon, Grace, Twister, and Wolfman.

One thing I did notice was there were some pretty large frame rate hits on most of the demos (ie, not very smooth) so I'm guessing it was cause of the weak proc or a badly configured test system. (or they were running an nForce2 and they lied to us)

They handed out these really cool looking note books. The bindings were shiny aluminum w/ the nVidia logo impressed on the front cover. that was cool.

So I got together with my biz partner today, and we knocked a few ideas out and got about 8 pages into our business plan. Tomorrow we are gonna get together earlier, and I have no classes either, so hopefully we either finish up or get really far.

It was a productive day. We found out that even with largely pessimistic numbers, we'll turn a profit the first year. This is teh yay.

So is there anyone out there with a Windows IIS server (running .NET) that would mind hosting this on their server:

Basically, it allows us to monitor what's happening on BF1942 servers through a web page. It looks pretty damn good (as can be seen by the live demo on that site).

K, I'm using mozilla right now. When I click on an internet shortcut file, it launches IE even when mozilla is running. How do I prevent this?

When opera is running, it loads internet shortcuts. If nothing is running, IE loads them.
