Hoping for that long-awaited Microsoft/Rare announcement at X02 next week? According to gamesindustry.biz there may not be an announcement, as negotiations with Nintendo for several of Rare's franchises are holding up the deal. This doesn't mean it's not going to happen -- it's done. But Microsoft wants more than just the developer, they want franchises like Perfect Dark along with it. What else will go with Rare? My guess is Conker's Bad Fur Day, since that wasn't much of a seller to begin with, Jet Force Gemini and Killer Instinct. And if Microsoft's really good, they'll get Banjo-Kazooie too, although I imagine that and Perfect Dark are going to be hard for Nintendo to part with. On a related note, RareNet has posted a must-read article with quotes a plenty from Rare employees, some of whom aren't too thrilled at the prospect of switching console systems after they've gotten used to working on the GameCube.

PS2 Lazlow Returns! PS2.IGN has posted a list of DJs from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and my favorite talk radio host Lazlow is on the list. Since this game takes place during the 80's, he's just a young shlub DJ at a rock station. Another welcome return is Fernando, everyone's favorite latin lover.
GameCube Zelda Delayed Nintendo's still-unnamed Legend of Zelda title for GameCube may have a Japanese release date (December 13th) but its American release is now slated for Q2 2003.
PS2 DragonQuest Remakes for PS2? As noted in this story at Games Are Fun, a Japanese magazine is reporting that remakes of older DragonQuest games are being remade for the PS2. If this is true, something may be announced on Friday, at the start of the Tokyo Game Show.
GameCube Phantasy Star Online == 50,000 and Growing Apparently over 50,000 copies of Phantasy Star Online for the GameCube have been sold since it first went on sale in Japan last week. Interestingly enough, only 34,000 were the game + modem package, as the rest seem to be waiting for the GameCube broadband modem that will be released at the end of the month.
Xbox Steel Battalion Shots New screenshots from Capcom's Steel Battalion are up at GameSpot tonight, taken from the import version of the game. If you're a Complete subscriber, there's also a new movie featuring an in-depth look at the game and its insane controller.
PS2 Get Kelly Slater, Play Tony Hawk Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer ships tomorrow, and apparently it includes a demo of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4.
PS2 TiVo on PS2 Using new software for your PC and PS2, it's now possible to use time-shifting features similar to how TiVo or Replay TVs work on your console system. But the real question, is why?
GameBoy Advance Best Castlevania Ever? Fanboys take note: IGN's review of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance is glowing indeed, saying it, "could be seen as the best in the series." And it's slightly lighter than the last one too.
GameCube On Capcom and GameCube Despite recent bitching by Capcom about the less-than-spectacular sales of Resident Evil for the GameCube, the company is still quite thrilled with Nintendo, and they seem to have several announced projects that will be exclusively for GameCube.
GameCube Skies of Arcadia Legend Some new, clear shots from Skies of Arcadia Legend, the upcoming GameCube port of the Dreamcast RPG are up at GameSpot tonight.
Console Game of the Evening: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for the Game Boy Advance. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but this game really did manage to squeeze the Tony Hawk experience into a handheld system.

  • There's no way Microsoft is going to get Killer Instict and I doubt Banjo. Here are a list of Rare's franchises and who owns them. This is from a message board post so not mine.

There is a difference between Rare and Rareware... Rareware is whom MS is buying, Rare Limited and all of its Franchises are all owned by Nintendo..
    Nintendos licenses are as follows

    Software Development etc.
    (a) Nintendo Technology Development Inc.
    (a) Nintendo Software Technology Corporation
    (a) Rare Acquisition Inc.
    (a) Rare Limited
    (a) Rare Inc.
    (a) Rare Toys & Games, Inc.
    (b) A/N Software Inc.
    (d) Rareware Limited
    (d) Retro Studios, Inc.
    (d) Silicon Knights Inc.
    (d) iKuni Inc.
    (e) Midway/Nintendo Inc.
    Source: Nintendo Financial Statements 5/30/02

    (a) Consolidated subsidiaries - This means Nintendo owns 100% of the company. These include NOA, NOE, etc.
    (b) Non-consolidated subsidiary with equity method applied
    (c) Non-consolidated subsidiary with equity method non-applied
    (d) Affiliates with equity method applied
    (e) Affiliates with equity method non-applied

Perfect Dark is owned by Rare Limited, not Rareware Limited this means Perfect Dark is 100% Nintendos property.

In the process of investing into RARE, Nintendo created all the other RARE companies to protect their investments. They had the money to found them of course, but its always worthwhile to make sure your intellectual property is protected. That is why RARE LLC, RARE Ltd., and such are not part of RAREWARE Ltd stock, but in fact part of Nintendo's own stock. MS bought RAREWARE Ltd.

The name PERFECT DARK, is OWNED by Nintendo. It is LISTED AS REGISTERED UNDER RARE LTD. A 100% OWNED SUBSIDIARY OF NINTENDO.

End Quote. Now I say if Nintendo was smart they'd hold on to the most popular franchise, Perfect Dark and get another team to develop the sequel for them. Say, Retro Studios anyone? :) I mean, the release date is soon approaching and after a vacation they'll need a new project. With an already spectacular engine, the experience there, they could do it. Maybe make it a GameCube title that supports Internet play. They got Zoid, use the talent! :)
