UT2003 Demo Patch Soon
by Steve Gibson, Sep 15, 2002 12:24pm PDTWell, its a safe assumption that a lot of you guys have checked out the UT2003 demo by now... You can still grab it over at FileShack without any wait times now, here are a bunch of notes on the demo from Epic:
- You need to have DirectX 8.1b installed to play the game successfully. If you get a crash on startup or at a random time during gamplay, this is likely to be the cause. Download it from Microsoft's DirectX site.
- We'll be releasing a small patch tomorrow. This will fix a number of reported bugs, and also serve as the first public test of UT2003's new auto-update feature.
- There was a bug in the server browser that caused it to crash frequently under heavy load. This wasn't triggered until thousands of servers came online. We found a master server-side fix for this so the problem should be gone now. Sorry for the inconvenience!
- Server admins, if running multiple servers on one machine, please give each server a port number differing from the others by at least 20: for example, 7000, 7020, 7040, ... To work around the bug mentioned above, we had to ban servers that are running on consecutive port numbers. Restarting servers using the new port number guidelines will bring them back online.
- The master server was intermittently down or unresponsive earlier because Epic's Internet connection was flooded. We've moved it to a much faster server offsite and it should be running fine now.
- Several other crash bugs have shown up significantly in the bug reports. We're looking into these. Thanks to everyone who has submitted bug reports to ut2003bugs@epicgames.com.
- UT2003's global player statistics tracking system will be coming online tomorrow. To use it, you'll need to turn on stats tracking from the settings menu, and choose a unique name and password.
- Yes, UT2003's Joystick support needs work.
- Be sure to read the UT2003 Demo Frequently Asked Questions for information on other known issues and workarounds

I run a decent system, not state of the Art, more like state of the obsolete but I have everything the game claims it needs to just Run.
Over 20 gig free space
128 meg ram
32 meg GForce 2 card.
AMD Thunderbird 800 mhz
Win 2000 SP3
I have issues with the demo.
When I try to launch the game I get an error. Even in Safe Mode.

Note - this problem has been brought up on the UT2003 Official Tech Message boards and has been ignored.
Also Note - That after anywhere from 1 to 100 attempts to launch the game, it actually launches without the error and the game will run fine. Exit the game and try to relaunch and the error returns. The error will once again stick for no rhyme or reason each time you try to launch the game and then just stop. all by itself and the game will launch flawlessly.
UT 2003 is very nice to look at but is just another FPS with no direction other than Deathmatch style play. Anyone who is addicted to this type of gameplay can get their fix from the Quake series, the Wonderful Mods of Half Life and so on.
If UT 2003 included anything remotely simular to Counter Strike, Team Fortress, or any number of other Role Style Multiplay gaming then i would be very interested in its purchase. Also, I question its support for the Mod making community.
Also, I have to question how bright they are. they in their infinate wisdom have disabled Search on their Forums, making it that much harder to locate tech info, workarounds and error fixes on their site.
I will not be buying this beta from them

I gave it the good 'ol 1/2 hour effort then went happily back to Quake 3.. Graphics look about about the same to me.. I really dont like the UT player models or the lousy weapons..

The tech is fucking perfect compared to shoddy engines like bf1942, but the gameplay is just a rehash. Get some new ideas please and try again.

However if you do not dl animal porn and you have problems with the demo, you can put the blame on your DELL or Gateway or whatever the hell prebuilt pc you have. Be a cool dude man like me and build your own pc, because if you cant build your own pc YUO = FAGOT.

Then again it's a beta, so maybe I'm expecting too much. The demo doesn't ship with the ability to run High-Res textures and I haven't seen it in OpenGL mode yet...
