Battlefield 1942 Available
by Steve Gibson, Sep 13, 2002 7:38am PDTFor most people in the US Battlefield 1942 should be available in your local software store or if you delivered the game it should have shown up at your door by now. Seeing as though so many folks around here feel that sliced bread has been replaced by BF1942 as the best thing ever, here's your thread dedicated to what the full game is like, your experiences with it so far.. and any possible trouble shooting. Oh yes, and the mandatory patch/demo links:

I'm fairly confident that it ISN't actually the game but more likely a low memory or something like that. My PC specs are quite high:
XP 2600mhz
1024 MB RAM
9800 Graphics card
Audigy 2 Sound card
I think MAYBE some other background program is taking up all the available memory as it used to run fine. Does anyone have any experience of this or know why this could be?
I've notice that on start up the PC when checking processor speed only ran to someting like 1000Mhz when it used to run to 2600mHz I've increased my clock speed in BIOS so now it show 2000mHz on start but I don't know if this affects anything?
Any help grately apreciated. Thanks

Shows how much the game is based on actual landmasses and the developers' attention to detail. Also, with a little effort, players can glean tactics and shorthand phrases from links such as this. For example:
- the Japanese attack initiated on the southern half of the island
- "The Village" is calles Peale Island
- the westernmost part of the map is Wilkes Island (easier to type out than describing the area)
Anybody know of other sites such as this one with maps and accounts of the other levels in the game? They could be useful for drawing up tactics for multiplayer. I'm finding this stuff to be fascinating.

1. Delete/rename the files in your /movies folder. You skip the initial movies, and get dropped right at the menu. You can leave the background.bik file if you like the animated background :)
2. I was having choppy play in the middle of firefights. It would be smooth everywhere else, except in heavy firefights, when I needed the fps. It was a LITTLE better changing my graphics settings to medium, but still got choppy. The fix is:
Change your sound detail setting to low. That's it. I am now running at 800x600x32 120Hz at >90fps all the time. I left it at 44Hz, and left it on hardware accel sound.
I've played about 20 minutes with the new sound setting, and haven't had the chop once. I read this on another forum, and though you guys might want to know.

On one of the maps flew over to get to a flagpoint. Parchuted out, had a run around battle with an opponent and watched as my plane landed straight on top of him.....

I ask because it's obvious some of you are really fucking great pilots and I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong... I can't seem to get lined up very quickly and in my attempts to get lined up, I'm a sitting duck for AA. Seems like some of you can come right out of a tight 180 turn and be lined up right as you straighten out...

- changing to 800x600x32 with no Aniso filtering made the game stable
- - this means hitting ESC was fine and fast loads, it didn't crash!
- - in-game fonts look nice at this res, but not at others
- - game crashed and rebooted at 1024x768x32 when I tried to exit. BAD!
- one of the unlabeled windows while the game is CD-checking is BlackScreen.exe and it "was not responding." WTF?
- I was getting about 65fps on all settings with 100% texture quality (radeon 8500dv)
Anybody know what Blackscreen.exe is for? It's the black screen (duh) with the logo, tank, and german helmet that shows up between map changes.

1) Is enabling Hardware accel a good thing?
2) Will anything of 512MB Ram make a real difference in this game?
3) Is there CD-Key authentication when going to play on a server, like in Q3 and wolf? Just wondering I want to install on my other machine so a friend can play, until I can pickup another copy at the store..

This was fixed, although not quite to the same level of stability as before I added the 9700. So I just had to get the retail and play all those other sweet levels not to mention a good server without a load of smacktards.
But alas the Retail crashes every 5 mins if it doesn't right after loading :-(. The woes of having a legacy OS with a legacy Soundcard (98 + Mx300) and being BF1942less.

-How do i show my frame rate? Hell, how do I get to the console?
-I'm retarded. On my Gf4-ti4400, How Do I ensure that I'm doing 4x AA in 1280x960? Is that a windows setting, or can I set that in game?
-I have an SB Audigy Gamer. For some reason, if I turn on hardware sound accel, it only shows 31 channels. Uh.. What? And then, I get the Laggy radio messages. You know what I mean. Suddenly no text/radio messages fly by.. and Then I get 15 in a row. Really annoying. With hardware sound accel turned off that does not happen.
-And whats the password for the army.eof.net server? Had it, and then lost it.. anyone? starvey(-at)-mail.com
Running all of this on a Athlon2000XP

So, there's an allied mofo shooting a rocket at my jeep way in the distance. I avoid it and floor it at him. Somehow, as I hit him (i'm guess he jumped?) he ends up on my hood. I hop out, the car rolls foward a goot 15ft, and I return the favor by sending him a rocket. The jeep goes BOOM, and he goes flying into the air, and parachutes back down! I finish him off with my handgun.

Internet:
1 disc/player per computer
Does this mean that 1 copy of BF1942 will allow two players to play internet games? It kinda sounds like it based on that, but there's only one cd-key.

It's amazing the difference in sound quality going from 64 channels to 31 channels, but I can live with the sound for a higher res and better looking game.

I am running XP1800+,512MB Ram,GF4 TI4600. Seems to be server dependent, but on a good server I can run at 1280X960 at High Graphics settings. Other servers or bigger maps I need to bump it down to 1024x768 in most cases.
I do notice that alot of the lag and choppiness is server related more so that client related. I can get on one server running at totally different settings and everything seems smooth, another server its not.
I just do see how the client side settings like resolution, etc could be affected by something server side, that is unless they have a very wacked architecture.
Nonetheless the game owns..

1. Can I keep my head/view straight when going prone? If not, wtf?
2. Has anyone actually shot another moving player? Should I be leading my shots, or is there prediction? Leading, wtf?
3. Shoulder mounted rocket propelled grenades appear to do decent damage against anything metal, and miniscule damage against things living, true? wtf?
4. Grenades are currently my weapon of choice (besides bailing from jeeps). Throwing them is a painful learning experience. They're oddly bouncy. The blast radius appears to be six miles. Do we like this? (wtf?)
5. Haven't dug out my joystick yet, but flying by keyboard is almost doable. Is there a way to set the throttle level though? FullPower/NoPower is all I'm finding?
6. Can the shoulder mounted rocket proppelled grenade launcher be used to take down airplanes? I've fired at some enemies performing strafing runs and sworn the grenade went right through them...
Despite all these question/comments/wtf's I had a blast the whole time playing. Dumbed down the gfx a bit for my so-so system and everything ran w/out a hitch. My teammates appeared to be lanning from the local mental hospital, but I'm used to that by now.
Comments, clarifications, answers ect are very much appreciated....
Gracias,
Juggernaut

I did, however, do a quadruple roll down a hill with a mobile artillery, and land upright. So I get style points. And no, my antics were not why we kept losing.
