by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 03, 2002 8:02am PDTA late start today, but I'm over it. How about you? Weird problem with my PC yesterday. It was locking for about twenty seconds every few minutes all of a sudden, a few hours after a reboot. People told me the CPU might be overheating so I checked in the BIOS and it was running higher than before. However after I rebooted the problem seemed to have gone away despite the fact that I didn't change anything. However after a while the problem suddenly returned, though I wasn't doing anything intensive with the PC, just browsing around. Then I noticed when it locked, my CDRW made a faint noise. I checked Windows Explorer and sure enough my second IDE channel wasn't being seen anymore so no DVD-ROM and CD-RW. I shut down, check cables, see that nothing is wrong. I boot up again, after a few minutes my CDRW starts making horrible sounds while my PC is locked for a good thirty seconds. After a while it stops but once again, no more CD drives in Windows. I shut down again, unplug the CDRW and it's been fine ever since. Can use the DVD-ROM just fine too. I have no idea what the hell happened, but it sure is weird... Movie: Cheer up. The world's about to end in ten minutes anyway.

Its amazing when working on a portrait how the slightest tiny difference to the shape of eyes completley changes the entire impression of the picture. Its fun playing with the picture.

You may be aware of the recent SMB exploit that has been circulating around the internet. It basically has resurrected WinNuke and allows someone to crash a windows machine over a network with a few mouse clicks if port 139 and 445 are open on your machine.
A fix is now available:

Just completed my hard drive upgrade/Deathstar avoidance maneuver. http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=5427312
The image seems to have worked successfully. So far, only one minor issue: I have only one drive connected to the system (the new Seagate 60 GB drive), but in the BIOS startup menu, the drive is listed as primary slave, even though the jumpers are set to primary master/single drive on the hard drive itself. Will this correct if I plug in the second drive with its jumpers set to primary slave? Anything else I should do post-imaging to ensure the integrity of the image? I've tried ScanDisk, but it wants exclusive access to the system and I wanted to get an answer to this question first.
One other comment: Antec cases rule - quick release bays for easy install of hard drives are the best feature in the known universe.

I think thats pretty cool. All too often I catch myself noticing parents dumbing themselves down, or talking down to their kids, rather than to them as little people. I believe it hampers a significant amount of personality development and perhaps even self confidence if kids aren't treated as individuals. A lot of parents harbour a standard approach to interacting with kids, which is in a lot of cases very similar across the board, as apposed to identifying unique personality traits amongst children, and relating with them with that in mind.
My grandfather was a lot like that. He had six grandsons ( me, my brothers, and my cousins ) and he treated us all differently, and related to our individual personalities really well. He treated us like little men, even when we were young, and he made us feel really good about ourselves - because we knew we could talk to granddad about stuff we liked and enjoyed, and he'd relate to us as people, not little kids - he was genuinely interested in the way we thought, and what we enjoyed as individuals.
You know how you have friends who you can talk to cool stuff about that you share a common interest in ? Stuff like that. People ( parents ) who are interested in what you like, simply because thats what makes your character, perhaps to better understand you as a person. My parents are like that, and it was also one of my grandfather's greatest personality traits - I consider that a really cool thing, and it makes me sad to think that quite a few kids I've noticed lately don't have that.
Sorry about the rant, but the abovementioned tv interview I watched last night just popped into my head :) Thought it was worth a mention here.

Ok Shackers, so what are you really afraid of? Yeah, alot of us have expressed our disapproval of arachnid lifeforms, but what sorts of things happen in your worst nightmares?
I'm afraid of being shot. I don't anticipate being in a position where I could be, although I've considered both military service and law enforcement jobs in the past, but for some reason I'm just terrified of it. I've had a few dreams about being shot, and in both instances I couldn't really feel anything... quite the opposite of what it raelly feels like, I imagine. I get the idea that barring being killed outright, it would be the most intense concentrated pain possible, along with the burning heat from the bullet lodged in your body. And the unpredictable nature of bullets, bouncing through the body and tearing things up... Just scary, I think.
I hope that if one day, I am for some reason pinned down on a beach or storming a compound that I can find the resolve and courage to overcome the fear and get the job done.
