by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 24, 2002 5:44am PDTHad some problems with site cookies again the past week or so. We're really pushing the size limit unfortunately. If you happen to lose your username/password info, try to locate your cookie (in Win2K/XP its \Documents and Settings\-your username\cookies\) and delete the remainder of the text file in its entirety, since I tried and trim a few things that will remain in there until it's totally gone. Still need a better solution but I'm having a lot less problems now. Movie: Die you bewinged spawn of Satan!

So here's the deal, I wrote thie diagnostic test last week (just started a masters program in CE and CS) and scored 3 out 9 points (although about half scored 0, heh). Needless to say I was shocked. It wasn't anything particularly hard but I had just forgotten everthing (you know basic rules of math).
Anyway I was donig some repitition math and came across an interesting problem (that I don't remember a solution to). What if you have a number like this a^(0.234524523346...) and you want to find out what that is? Of course you could try to find the rational number for exponent but it can be hard to do that sometimes and also some numbers don't have rational equivalents (pi come to mind). So I tried to define a function to do this and came up with this (yes I know that there are C functions defined that do this but I haven't looked at it and I wanted to try on my own). I can't compile anything right now so I can't test it.
const EPSILON 0.00001d; //declares the accuracy of the aproximation
double pow(double a, double b){
//early outs / trivial cases
if ((b-floor(b) < EPSILON) && b >= 1.0d){ //it is an integer in double's clothing =)
double sum=a;
for (int i=1;i<floor(b);i++) sum*=a;
return sum;
}
if (abs(a) < EPSILON) return 0; //base is zero
if (abs(a-1)<EPSILON) return 1; //base is 1
if (abs(b) < EPSILON) return 1; //exponent is zero
return square(pow(a,b*0.5));
}
Basically the idea is that you half the exponent and then square the result which gets you right back to where you started. But if you continue to half the exponent until you reach either an "integer" (a floating point number that is sufficiently close to an integer number) you can just multiply the base with itself the required number of times. And of course you have the special case where the exponent is 0 which returns 1. The two other special cases (which deals with the base) could be removed because taking 0^b or 1^b is just stupid and shouldn't be done =)
So the question is (since I can't compile and test it) does this work? I tried to reason a bit on paper but I'm very tired so I might be wrong but it seems like it should work.
Anyone know "how it's done"?
Thanks.

It sounds like it needs an amplifier running between the turntable and the PC but I don't know how that would be the case because can't the PC act as the amplifier?
Anything I can do to boost the volume of this signal?

Example: big scary monster runs at you...you blast them down to very little health and take out your flamethrower and light them up. From this point, they are your bitch. They'll run away from your flamethrower and eventually they'll stay just out of range of the fire (if they can) and stare at you and the minute you let your guard down they'll rush you.
The NPC teammates are great! They actually hold fire when you run past their guns in a fight and they'll reposition themselves if necessary. They are very effective. They have good aim, they are very perceptive of their surroundings, and the medics can heal them and you. You can actually rely on your teammates to keep YOU alive, which is something I've never seen in a game (normally teammate AI = YOU ARE THE ULTIMATE SOLDIER/babysitter)
The game kicks ass so far! The content makes Resident Evil look like a disney flick, the sound, controls, graphics, everything are superb. I have a few complaints but they are greatly overshadowed by the good stuff (so far).
Is the game scary? I don't know...ask this guy:

And here's the money shot. Don't look at this one unless you have a strong stomach :p This is the very rare occurence when your npc's absolutely lose it to the horror and aren't content with just screaming and shooting wildly in the shadows anymore:

This game deals alot with trust and madness, just like the movie. You npc's have very human-like reactions to the current situation, it's good stuff. You can keep them sane very easily for the most part. Just gotta toss em a few clips of ammo or a gun when you find a place to stock up. Oh, and don't run away from a fight and leave your npc's alone and fighting for their lives. They can handle themselves, but they don't like being led by a pussy.

Tenebrae Quake is a Q1 source hack that has real-time shadows and pixel lighting. Spotted on Blue's but worthy of reloading classic Quake. Check out the screenshots page, highly recommended.

Ok, I want to upgrade my mobo's BIOS (Asus P4B-LX). I go to Asus' site, and it seems the only flash utility they have needs to run in DOS (aflash.exe)! But I'm running Win XP! WTF. How do I update my BIOS then??

And then there was the ultra-speculative "Top Ten Games of 2003"; how many "facts" in these articles are later proven true? One out of thirty? Lucky for me there's the DN:MP demo, so I can see how much I hate it without spending a single cent.

I finally get into the game and I get a constant 999 ping, but I can see people moving around and I can hear them talk. I can also talk, but it's delayed of course. I can also spectate people fine, but I can't move or do anything. Anyone know wtf is the problem here?

I know we all enjoyed Quakecon immensely, so of course another get together mid-year would be most excellent in my opinion. I know alot of us are single or don't have anyone for Christmas, so why not have a shack Christmas? Getting to hang out with shackers is about the best Christmas present I can think of :)
