Deus Ex 2 Screenshots
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 24, 2002 5:10am PDTThe Deus Ex 2 website has been updated, adding four new screenshots. Much like DOOM 3, this is more of a "you need to see it in action" type of game thanks to bumpmapping and real time lighting.

Shackers on this forum have been comparing the graphics of Doom3 to DeusEx2. But seeing as how the developers have totally different styles, I wonder if that is even possible. Like for instance... the reference was made to the Marine's teeth and stubble in this screenie: http://www.shacknews.com/screens.x/doom3/DOOM+3/1/073002/intro_00603.jpg
But what do teeth and stubble have to add to the pure gameplay experience? I mean, I'm glad ID is going for a more *real* look, but I don't honestly see the addition of teeth and stubble as more important / viable over something like additional on screen charecters and a more interactive environments. Just judging from these screen shots, and the track record of Ion Austin, DeusEx2 will be pretty damn envolving... not saying Doom3 won't be, but with track records in mind, the argument really shouldn't be about graphical realism, but more about environmental ambience and interactivity - which I consider more important when it comes to "getting into a game."
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, what do you think is more important, and do you think graphics make up for environment?
Apples and Oranges, anyone?

Doom 3 is not like UT2K3
Doom 3 is not like Halo 2
It's a totally different game, so it makes no sense to compare them all the time. Different games, different graphics, different gameplay.

I'm glad to see a Deus Ex 2, because the gaming market needs more variety. Yes I will probably play it, and no I probably won't buy it. But that's my own opinion.
My all time personal favorite list:
Quake 1 (QuakeWorld to be more specific)
Team Fortress Classic (which I rarely play anymore)
Doom I/II
Q3A (the game I love to hate actually)
Descent 1 (I ruled this game when it came out)
And slowly merging on that list, WarCraft III. Maybe a late appearance by BF1942... let's face it, flying kicks ass.

Deus Ex 2 baby. I hope they make System Shock 3 after they finish with that.
DE2 is my most anticipated game, period.

ahem.. unlike DOOM 3, this game looks like crap in still shots.

Hmm...truthfully I have to give Doom3 the edge on the bumpmapping of models but Deus Ex has the edge in most other departments. Check out the polycounts on the pipes, and even the size of space involved in the screenshots of the two games.

You can have your Doom 3 graphics but I'll take Deus Ex 2's gameplay any day.

The only remote thing between the two that CAN be compared is the visual/audio quality.
Personally, the gameplay between a fast-paced FPS (which we don't know if Doom 3 is, just basing that on id's previous releases), compared to the gameplay of a RPG FPS, is like comparing a Dodge Viper to a Ford Pinto, they just don't relate.

You've gotta know this this though -- DX2 (and Thief3) will have the best storylines and gameplay of any game released near their time.

The roof of the bar is rather busy with all the bars and pipes. Add in the lack of antialiasing, and IMO, the scenes are just looking wierd. Something just isn't quite right there, but I can't pinpoint one exact problem.

the NPC's just REALLY look like large, 3d Fallout characters.
