Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Aug 21, 2002 5:30pm PDTBeen working on some fun perks for the existing and future ShackDSL customers recently, the folks who got all those free GeForce3 and 4 cards a while back all seemed pretty happy. I think this next round of stuff might make some of you guys giggle even more. We're still working out all the details but I'll put out a story for a few days in the next week or two to make sure we have everyone accounted for and properly classified with SE so you guys score more free stuff and of course Maarten and I get credit. Oh yeah, and the ShackDSL page will hopefully finally be getting the much needed design overhaul soon. Ok well enough of that, here's some stuff for the evening if for some reason you arent off playing BF1942:
- Using eyeballs to do typing - RIAA vs Verizon - Why apes cant talk - Kyle's XP2600 article.. he clocked that thing to 2.5ghz! - Crazyness, they are gonna try to revive the mammoth - Old rich dude scamming for sex, it's a good scam - Newfangled super duper cool rockets - Paypal is coughing up $200,000 to the government because of dealing with gamblersLastly, I got BF1942 working.. A few people emailed in saying to delete your videocard from device manager and let WindowsXP re-detect it.. at first this didnt work for me either, but after I did it a second time that seemed to do the trick. I also disabled my refreshlock utility before doing any of that stuff just to be safe.

The two new debug variables for these features are:
/bot_debug_accuracy 1
/bot_debug_weapon 1
Turn one or both of them on if you want to see exactly how the bot is tracking its weapon accuracy and selecting weapons

Ventro's New Profile is Up!
Lots of people said that my old profile was too "geocities like" (the post here: http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=5289516).
Here is version 1: http://members.shaw.ca/ventro/profile/profile.htm
So I changed it to version 2! Hopefully for the better - take a look!

I started out in a circle, banked about 20 degrees, full throttle, stick all the way back. Once you get high enough, the ground is totally out of sight and I had to keep track of where I was w/ the map. After a minute or two... I hit what I could call "thin air" - my ailierons stopped working at full efficiently and I began to flatten out, the rudder began to fail to keep me in a right circular turn as well! The plane just felt REALLY clunky and not agile. a few seconds after that all controls started to just be totally ineffective and I dove about 100 feet (it seemed like) until I encountered a zone where the aircraft was back into feeling normal... so I climbed back up to the apparent limit again... balied and popped the chute.
I drifted down for nearly 2 minutes!

That would leave tanks and anti-tank but those don't seem to be very effective against ships.
Ah yes engineers could try to swim and board the ship but those are easy to hold of if the ship's crew isn't completely blind. you'd need snipers to cover the swimming engies and maybe one assault for protection while on the ship. And then how many charges would it take to blow up the ship? These tactics would tie up a lot of men and time. Even if succesfull, you can do the whole thing again a few minutes later.
I see no possible defense agains the destroyer if it's used well. Seems best to ignore it, try keep the spawnpoint and forget about the planes.

(Luckily, there are 10 fights a day between chicago and denver so it's not like i'll need to wait until nighttime to get out, but If i have to pay money it'd really suck :()

Every year, last year's model ends up being underpowered with all kinds of flaws, COMPLETELY UNRIDABLE! But this year's motorcycles, well they're all super improved great... but there's always one problem that you can fix yourself in your garage by getting some aftermarket component.
Good thing we have magazine writers to tell us where the engineers don't engineer well.
I'd buy it all a bit more if it wasn't always the same article over and over again for 20 years.

The recording of both the Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend albums will begin on September 3 at the Armoury Studio in Vancouver. A February release is intended for both. The new SYL (to be self-titled) has progressed into a “fully realized, mature sounding version of all the tasty Strapping bits we've come to know and love. Insane war anthems, really primal and bleak... no mercy but no malice, just pulverizing, totally modern music.â€Â

Did you call everybody by their Shack names the whole time? Or did everyone reveal their real names and use those, making a pact not to reveal them on the Shack?
Just curious and jealous that I'm too much of a n00b to join in the fun
