Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Aug 20, 2002 6:00pm PDTThanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday the other day. I'm still wandering around in my 20's enjoying being stupid. When I hit 30 though a few more years from now.. well then people are really gonna give me funny looks when I tell them what a friend and I do for a living. Plus I'm funny looking. Looks like we're getting close to the back to school rush again followed shortly by the holiday game rush. Should be lots of fun, or at least kind of fun.

even though we won it was made incredibly difficult by the teams constant focus on the motherfucking airport
basically no one defended the smaller bases cept me and J4nus the southside of the island was offlimits to the Axis, finally after many pains in the ass we get the axis down to one spawn and i finally head over to get it and then the rest of the bases just fall one by one...the airport is safe of course! finally some of us get the northern exterior base and trying to defend it from the onslaught of axis and maybe 1 or 2 guys spawn over there to help out
at least the airport is safe...
anyway we won but it was close 26 to 0, but goddamn there needs to be some "team leader" to tell ppl what to do...

Needless to say, this $300 SB Audigy Platinum is not working properly.
In fact, it's not working at all.
In fact, not only is it not working at all, but when it is installed, Windows doesn't work EITHER.
In fact, not only does windows not work when the card is installed, but windows doesn't even START when the card is installed. I get a BSOD on bootup. The only way to get into windows is to load safe mode and uninstall the card.
W.T.F.
The only solution I can pull off the various message boards and faqs and so forth I have spent the last 4 hours reading is that it might start working if I reinstall windows from scratch.
Screw you Creative Labs, and screw your goddamn excuses for soundcards. I'm sure it sounds great, but first it must WORK.
Frick.
So, what soundcard should I get instead? I guess my options are the Gametheater XP, the Philips Soundedge or whatever, and the Terretec... Nobody around here carries the Terretec card, so that's probably last choice...

Pretty straightforward, I wanted to find out just what the maximum range was on the gun and what physics came to play...
I lined up just north of the SW base, I moved forward until the hill of the airfield clipped into range when zoomed, not just the normal clip plane -

From here you can make out the faint hillside and a faint AYB crouching -

Railgun campers ahoy -
http://users.lvcm.com/alphawolf/Artillery/sniper3.jpg
In short, it's has no gravitational model on the bullets and it extends beyond clipping distance even when zoomed with all details turned on. This was tested by me shooting AYB from beyond clipping range just having a pretty good guess where he would be. If you can't see it, you can still hit it.
This game's netcode makes using the sniper rifle very, very difficult against moving targets. To me, this is a good thing. Surely you can imagine the hell it would be with this amount of visibility and giving players what is essentially just another railgun.
If you stand on the carrier deck waiting for planes to spawn, expect to take sniper fire from the two peninsulas.
Now for some fun pics:

I totally thought the map would be an extremely simplified or totally made-up version in the game..

Interesting. So you're getting your money's worth with a Microsoft OS: the fonts in there would cost hundreds of dollars to license.

Is there a way to unbeach the small troop boats?
I keep trying to find a way out to the ships ( as an allied ) and mess up stuff.
Almost every one I find is stuck.
Is there any other way out there besides a plane?

This guy walks into a pub and half his head is a big orange. He says: 'I'll have a pint of lager, please.' And the barman says: 'Excuse me, I couldn't help noticing, but half your head appears to be a big orange.' And the boy goes: 'Yeah, had that for a while now.' So the barman says: 'How did that come about, if you don't mind me asking?' And the boy says: 'I was in this old junk shop when I found a lamp and when I gave it a rub this genie appeared. He offered me the standard three wishes, and I said: 'For my first wish, I'd like every woman I ever meet to fall madly in love with me.' So the genie waves his genie hands and suddenly there's women looking at me. Then the genie says: 'What will your second wish be?' I said: 'I'd like a wallet with £1million in it, and I can never lose it, it can't be destroyed, and every time I spend any of the money, it'll be replenished.' And the genie says: 'Your wish is granted. Now, what will your third wish be?' So I said: 'For my third wish, I'd like half my head to be a big orange.'

In early medieval thimes, "minute" became the English word for a 60th part of a circle, adapted from its Roman term pars minuta prima, first small part. About the same time, "second" was adopted as the 60th part of a 60th, taken from the Latin secunda minuta, second small part.
now you know

my views on women are severely skewed now that i've seen croatia - the women over there are beyond beautiful - granted, anti-virus is still in the top 99% of gorgeous foreign women in my book, but she is from a land where all women are gorgeous...so my friends are walking around today and pointing out hot chicks and im like "nope...nope...nope..." and they all think im nuts now
they just havent been to paradise..
