Radeon 9700 Benchmarks
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 19, 2002 6:13am PDTHardOCP has posted some actual Radeon 9700 benchmarks with frames per second listed, the card being tested in various games and benchmark apps. It's still pretty damn fast. There are also reviews at AnandTech, Tom's Hardware, Extreme Tech and Firing Squad. Short version: It kicks ass. A lot. In some AA benchmarks it is allmost 5 times faster than a Ti4600. (R300 - 101fps, Ti4600 - 21fps) (Oh, HardOCP is slashdotted so their article might be hard to reach. It's not just you.)

(I say drivers AND compatibility because there might be problems where it's not really ATi's fault but some badly written games don't work on the newer card. Still a problem at the end of the day.)

I haven't upgraded monitors in a LONG time, still gaming on a Viewsonic PS17 at 1024x768 -- but now I can unlock a lot of detail without having to focus on avoiding steep framerate drops ! Even if the NV30 will destroy the R300, it's good to see that ATi is truly RAISING the bar, not just matching it.
400 bucks is pretty damn steep, but at least it will deliver. Shit, I wonder what gaming is like in 1600x1200 !!! Commencing operation scrimp and save for l33t gaming hardware overhaul.... GO ! :)

I don't doubt that's true but can someone explain it? Why would occluded surfaces matter for shadow calculations when the "light" that generates the shadow only comes from one direction?
Or did I misunderstand something? Just curious.

In the meantime, I'm wondering if I have any options for a low-cost "stopgap" upgrade. I've been looking at benchmarks of lower-end cards as well as CPU-scaling benchmarks, but since none of the benchmarks use systems spec'd as low as mine, it's hard to get a real grasp on what I can expect performance-wise.
I'm considering an ATI Radeon 7500 64MB DDR ($90). I'm just having a hard time finding any benchmarks that will verify that I'll see any benefit given my CPU configuration. I'm using Q3A as a reference, so if anyone has any thoughts or better yet, a system with a similar CPU that you can give me some real impressions, I'd much appreciated it.

Someone commented about the few cases where the geforce edged out the 9700... The scores were very close in each of those cases, and as Anand pointed out, it was due to the tests being cpu and driver limited.. The 4600 has more mature drivers, obviously, so it gained the edge, though it was never more than a few percent.

Jedi Knight 2 @ 1600x1200 w/ AA & Aniso
GeForce4 Ti4600: 21.6 fps (Detonator version 30.82)
ATI Radeon 9700: 101.2 fps (Catalyst 02.2)
And a lot of the other 9700 benchmarks have some cpu bottlenecks even with the fastest CPU's available.
