Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Aug 06, 2002 6:01pm PDTSomehow it's already Tuesday? Yeah I'm confused. Thanks for all the FileShack feedback. We're pretty happy with the execution of things so far and havent had too many problems with people saying "i cant find this file" which is a good thing. We launched with 500 files and have since bumped that count to over 750 so we're on a good pace. I'm thinking the file submission forms will really help flesh things out once we ge tthose online. Ok so here is stuff for the evening, be careful:
- Iowa College is ditching that silly paper stuff - Getting the shuttles back out into space - That New York cancer stick tax hike seems to have cut sales and boosted revenue Thanks Fark - Big time ATM fraud due to Sept 11th - Screw caps are classy - Watch out for some internet attacks - Stinky flower storyLastly, surprise... Anna Nicole's show apparently sucks but it got great ratings

I'm posting from Knoppix right now.
Knoppix is a live linux installation compressed to CD. You boot up from the cd, it sets up a ramdrive, and decompresses a fully functional Debian linux installation with KDE3 and everything. It has OpenOffice, KOffice, a shitload of network and system restore apps, games, and all kinds of goofy shit you'd expect to find in a Linux install. And it fits on one CD.
All you people just itching to try Linux out, this is the way to do it! No install, partitioning, software config, etc. Just download the ISO, burn it, boot it, and you are good to go.
I plan on using this cd for two things: When I'm on site and want to do some network diagnostics (I work for a wireless ISP, that stuff is important) and when I want to surf the web, do work, send mail, etc. at someone else's computer but I don't have to input any of my personal data.
I am unbelievably impressed with this. THIS is why open source is useful, forget your commercial distros.

Miramax took the film, the original special edition VHS with the deleted scenes and intros and the Criterion edition laserdisc and just mashed them together into a delicious special edition DVD pie that everyone should run right out and buy the minute it hits store shelves. It's just that cool. Seriously.
About fucking TIME!

I just need some practice. The manual helps a little bit, but I still don't know a whole hell of a lot about the units, etc.
