NWO Multiplayer Beta 2
by Steve Gibson, Aug 06, 2002 8:56am PDTA new multiplayer beta of New World Order has been released for you guys to download on FileShack. This new beta can probably only be an improvement over the last one (story) which so many people couldnt even get to run. You're required to download a Microsoft DirectX beta patch to run the demo though which may scare some people.
Please download this patch from the Microsoft website (click here) and login with the following case sensitive ID and password: Username: DXBeta Password: DirectX9
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight

38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012

I have a feeling that P3I has some MBA at the helm who knows nothing about the game industry, looking for a quick ROI on the money they've put in, and they want to get the game out the door, not realizing that these extremely poorly coordinated 'betas' are costing them zillions of sales at worst, and crapping up their reputation (P3I's and Termite's) hard at best.
That's all pure speculation of course, but I can't believe that Termite feels that the game is ready or even presentable in its current form. It's gotta be someone who doesn't care about games and has some influence over Termite.
And for the record, personally I don't care about NWO specifically, I think the engine tech they have is interesting, but no matter how good the game is, one more military squad shooter added to the sea of others looking to cash in on CS is going to go largely unnoticed on my radar. Just like Global Ops did. (for those interested, GO has less than 400 people playing it right now, according to gamespy - less people that are still playing Tribes 1 - yeah, that put a huge dent in the CS scene...)

Graphics: Diz-am. Few things that are bothersome are; no bullet holes in glass/can't break glass, textures have that PSOne shifting prob (i think its a GF2 thing cuz my bro's GF4 128Meg doesn't do it), sparks on my GF2 are funk-e. Hell it plain chunks running around on my GF2 32MB card in 16bit 800x600. Runs beautifully on my bro's card and his 1.4Ghz tho.
Lighting: very nice for a FPS; downside is the environment lighting doesn't affect the player model =\
Models: overall, very nice. Some are plainly textured, others are nice.
Sounds: MP5 is the best sounding MP5 I've ever heard, hands down. The shells, ricochets, plinks, firing, etc are very nice.
Networking: Couldn't tell ya...(yet)

Overall, if these guys can get another programmer onboard (1 programmer for this project is insane!), and keep fixing and updating, I'm all over this. The first beta was crap, this has come quite a ways. *I didn't install the DX patch to run around.
Specs:
AMD Athlon 1.2 XP
512 DDR
ATA66 HD
32MB GF2 GTS
SBLive
WinXP

I did try the original beta, but it was horribly slow, and crashed every few minutes. It looked pretty nice, though, and I can't imagine the thing being any worse than the first beta was, so I'm giving it a whirl. Well, if I can get DirectPlay 8.2 installed, like, ever, that is.
BUT HOLY COW EXCUSE THE CAPSLOCK BUT THIS GAME LOOKS AWESOME!
That was well worth the download (fileshack is stellar btw) only for seeing what games can and should look like on my PC. This looks very promising to me, hopefully they'll fix these bugs soon.

If DirectPlay 8.2 will improve gameplay in other games than NWO, why complain?
In a month or two: OMG why is my DirectX saying it's expired, WTF?
