Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Aug 05, 2002 8:30pm PDTCan you believe there's just three weeks to go until Sony's online network goes live? Three weeks, and I still haven't gotten any clear picture from Sony as to what exactly their plans for this network in America are. Sony hasn't given any indication when or if we'll see the HDD add-on, which is absolutely necessary for the PS2's biggest online titles in Japan (Final Fantasy XI, Nobunaga's Ambition Online, etc.) or what the status of their online network in general is. I recently complained about Nintendo's lack of promotion for Super Mario Sunshine, but at least they've started up the hype machine. Where's Sony's? Do they consider this to be their big thing for the holiday season, or is it sort of a nifty thing for a niche audience? And has anyone confirmed whether or not Tony Hawk 3 will recognize the network adapter?
| PS2 Rumor Mongering PS2.IGN posted a new edition of their rumors column late last week. In this column are hints about a new PS2 platform title from Sonic Team, news that Criterion is working on a new FPS for the system, and the pleasantly surprising news that owners of FreQuency will be able to play all the songs from the original game online using the FreQuency 2 demo CD that ships with Sony's network adapter. | |
| Mortal Kombat Hands-On A hands-on look at Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is up at PS2.IGN (although the same article's on the various IGN sites due to the game's cross-platform nature). Aside from hands-on impressions, this preview is notable as it's the first time anyone has seen fatalities in the game, and they sound mighty impressive indeed. | |
| Sega GT 2002 A new preview of Sega GT 2002 is up at GameSpot tonight. | |
| GameCube Shots Also new at GameSpot are new shots from Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda, while Games Are Fun has new shots from Wario World and Star Fox Adventures. | |
| Xbox Shots New shots from SWAT: Global Strike Team are up at GameSpot, while CvG has some new shots from Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. | |
| Widescreen Panzer Dragoon Shots Gameforms has posted 24 screenshots from Panzer Dragoon Orta, which are particularly impressive, as they're in the 16:9 widescreen format without the "black bars" that are common for shots of this kind. Now if only I had a 16:9 television to play it on... | |
| | Perfect Dark 0 Debunked, but... Apparently the latest issue of Nintendo Power has a blurb confirming that the long-rumored Perfect Dark 0 is not in development, although they are working on a new action game, which may or may not be a Perfect Dark sequel. |
| NFL 2k3 Online Preview GameSpot has posted their impressions of playing NFL 2k3 over Microsoft's Xbox Live network. Their impressions are limited to just the game, as Xbox Live isn't well, live yet, but they do report on lag (not a problem, since the Xbox is broadband-only) and the voice chat functionality. | |
| Eternal Darkness Interview An in-depth interview with Denis Dyak, the president of Silicon Knights and the director of Eternal Darkness is up at Gamers.com. This interview originally ran in Electronic Gaming Monthly, and is definitely worth a read for anyone interested in the game. | |
| Red Faction 2 Preview A new preview of Red Faction 2 can be found at Computer and Video Games, featuring hands-on impressions of the game. |

Where's Sony's? Do they consider this to be their big thing for the holiday season, or is it sort of a nifty thing for a niche audience?
back in march 2002, sony admitted their online offering is not and will not be the main draw for the playstation 2 (http://news.com.com/2100-1040-855039.html).
"We don't see tremendous potential for revenue or a pay-for-play model out of the gate," [SCEA Vice President Andrew House] said. "We see this as another opportunity to develop better and more competitive products."
commentary from the Game Developers Conference also echoed the sentiment that online capability from sony will not hit its stride until the market is seeded with a large base of playstation 3 consoles (http://news.com.com/2008-1082-870323.html). will online play be a huge factor in the current generation of consoles? very unlikely because i seriously doubt that 'broadband in the living room' is prevalent across japan, north america, austrailia and europe.

Oh, how I hate when people say it isn't good without them. If you know how to play the game correctly, the regular dreamcast controller is all that you need. In fact, it's better just because you can jump cancel waaay faster than you possibly can with the twinsticks. Other than the possible 3 moves total that would be easier to do with the twinsticks, they are only good for the aesthetic feel. The basics though are easier to do with the DC controller (jump cancel, watari dashing, etc).
Basically, if you know how to truly play the game (I had to read the faqs before I really 'got' it) then it you shouldn't have any problem adjusting to the controller. That's not to say I wouldn't love to have the twinsticks, but I don't need them to enjoy the game.

In the next couple months, Sony have plans to release some rather high profile games, including the likes of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus and Ratchet and Clank. But to start off their jump into the action-adventure/platform genres, they’ve created what may be one of their best titles in quite some time, entitled, you guessed it, The Mark of Kri.

When Panzer Dragoon meets my HDTV, there is going to be some hot component sex going on in my living room. That game looks like Halo level spectacular.

Like I just said, im not that big into consoles. However, while I was in mexico I heard 5-6 people in my group say that back home they dont have a DVD player and bought a PS2 as their DVD player but rarely play the games
...
wth?
The DC has been getting a lot of play when I take it home, mainly between my brother and I and NHL2K2. Damn I love this game to pieces...
Found some info on it. They deal with one of the things I do hate about 2K2 (only being able to set strategies on the fly, not beforehand)
