Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Aug 02, 2002 8:30pm PDTRegardless of rumors to the contrary, Infogrames is not looking to be acquired, by Sega or anyone else. I never gave a second thought to that rumor, but after it turned out that Sega tried to purchase Square, nothing sounds too ludicrous to me anymore. The street is still positively buzzing with stories of Rare making games for other platforms, so I really hope someone says something official soon or my ears are gonna fall off.
| Sonic Collection in November Sega officially announced today that the Sonic Mega Collection will be released in North America this November (thanks BulletPro). Sonic CD is still not included, of course. | |
| Skies of Arcadia Legend GameCube Only Despite squashing rumors that claimed this months ago, Sega has confirmed that the planned Playstation 2 port of Skies of Arcadia is no more. And just to stick it to those of you without a GameCube, here are some new shots from Skies of Arcadia Legend, the now GameCube-exclusive port of the game. | |
| Steel Battalion Update As noted in this post at PlanetXbox, Capcom has updated their official Japanese Tekki site with new media from this mech sim (which is known here as Steel Battalion). | |
| TimeSplitters 2 System-Link Compatible GameSpot is reporting that the PS2 and Xbox versions of TimeSplitters 2 will be system-link compatible, allowing up to eight systems to be networked together for 16 player multiplayer. Of course, each one needs its own television, and you'll need an i-Link (FireWire) hub to do more than two PS2s. | |
| New Final Fantasy I & II Shots Here are some more screenshots from Final Fantasy I & II, which will be released separately for the PSOne (although they'll be available together as a collector's edition with action figures). These will be available in Japan on October 31st, with an American release likely, but not official yet. | |
| | Metal Slug to GBA, SNK vs. Capcom to NeoGeo Playmore, the parent company of what remains of SNK, has announced that they will be releasing Metal Slug Survival Missions for the Game Boy Advance, and SNK vs. Capcom for the NeoGeo. No details besides their appearance on an upcoming games list have come out yet. |
| SegaNet Free! Well, almost. Dreamcast gamers rejoice! SegaNet, the online Dreamcast network, is now free for all games...except Phantasy Star Online v.2, which retains its monthly fee. Hey, at least you can still play all the Chu Chu Rocket! you want for free now. | |
| Serious Sam Xbox Update The official Croteam site was updated on Thursday with a big status report on the Xbox version of Serious Sam. It sounds like they've done a lot to enhance the game, which will include levels from the first and second encounters, mixed together to make a single experience. | |
| Hyperspace Delivery Boy! Shots New shots from Hyperspace Delivery Boy, the Game Boy Advance port of the Monkeystone Games title are up at Pocket.IGN. This game is already available for both Windows and Pocket PC. | |
| Area 51 Announced Midway announced today plans to revive the old light gun title Area 51, with a little help from Stan Winston Studios. The new game, which will be an action-adventure title, will be released for all three major systems, and SWS is also developing a film based on the property. | |

Anyway, to help the online DDR community getting a totally objective opinion and review of the CobaltFlux pad, I started a little blog that goes over all my discussions and such with the CF staff. It's found at www.zillablog.com
So if anyone was considering the pad, like Hamfucker or Jack Mathews, should check this out.

anyway. we were strolling on a busy avenue on a mildy hot friday afternoon discussing videogames and MORTAL KOMBAT (hey, what else would a couple of junior highschool kids talk about when they are kicked out of the house). that's when he told me how cool it would be if MK would be ported to the PC. it's funny in retrospective because he's such a non-computer person, but had the idea of porting and software platforms down pat at that age.
anyway, in a total big-brother sorta way i laughed at him and told him that such realistic graphics would take another five years for computers to catch up... :) :) :) I don't know, but pc games seemed so primitive compared to arcades and even console games back then. hell, the average pc game today still feels relatively unpolished compared to the average console game (in certain ways).... but that's arguable and I'll just leave it at that ;)
my oh my did he give me the ha-ha look when we saw MK running on his friend's PC later that day. it was arcade perfect.
(... cept for that stack error ;)
But does the "gameplay over graphics" mantra mean that you shouldn't put any effort into making a game look appealing, or at least on par with the standard of the platform you're releasing on? Where is the line drawn? At what point is that just a crutch for laziness and/or lack of artistic talent? Clearly you're right, gameplay has been, and always will be, most important. But as platforms get more and more powerful, and as the market gets larger and more competitive, developers are going to find that they're shooting themselves in the foot if their visuals are sub-standard.

That is SO damn cool. I LOVE the Metal Slug games... they're so great! They're really the PERFECT game for being ported to the GBA... you can just sit down and play them for a while, and enjoy the game... and if you have to quit, no big deal.
I hope they put in a password system, or save system though, just in case I want to come back to a game... because Metal Slug does take a while to play through... even with Infinite credits!

That Mortal Kombat "art" is hilarious. And UGH, those Hyperspace Delivery Boy shots look primative. Almost like something from the Sega Master System. Surely they can do something to make it look competitive with current GBA titles?
#3, too hard to give just one answer, too many games... Some titles off the top of my head: Castlevania 3, Tenchu, WipeoutXL, Mario Kart, FF7, Super Mario Bros., Castlevania SotN, Legend of Zelda (the first one)... muh.
