FasterFiles has posted an edited chat log from a recent Mark Rein IRC chat. Thanks cryton. The chat log is pretty lenghty as Mark answered quite a few questions about the upcoming Unreal Tournament 2003.

  • i have to admit i'm pg in the comments there so i'm making the same type comments as the stuff you quoted. i can understand both points of view(but obviously don't embrace both). they are similiar yet so different. both argue about competitive fairness, and people not getting it. both have good points. lemme see if i can do a run down...

limited/restricted tweaking(which would be what ut2k3 seems to have)
-'more fair' due to less options(which alter the gameplay) or you could say a higher standard
-played as the game developer intended
-more intense atmospheric immersion in the game due to higher graphical/sound settings

    full tweaking
-anyone can tweak so it's essentially just as fair as restricted
-improves fps for both slow/fast computers which makes for more fluid gameplay
-more comfortable(hey it looks like qw!)/less annoying/less distracting(seeing my reflection in water is irrelevant to letting me preform better competitively as is high texture quality, etc)
-better visual/sound properties(or whatever, good example is tweaking in q3 for less sound lag so you can react faster) which results in qualitatively higher competitive play skills

basically it's irreconcilable differences. i understand the view i disagree with intellectually, but not anymore than that. none of the things i listed for limited tweaking has any positive connotations for me. yes, i also know i'm an extreme minority but i'm pretty passionate about my feelings. /me shurgs
