Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Jul 29, 2002 8:30pm PDTWhile you have to wonder if there's really a market for this sort of thing, a company called BroadQ announced today plans to release a commercial media player for the PS2. The software requires the upcoming network adapter to work, and will allow you to listen to MP3s and watch movies in MPEG 1/2, DivX and MPEG 4 format. If you've got a modded PS2, you can sign up for the beta test, otherwise you can pre-order the "preview" version, which will be released at the end of August. While it's not unusual for software like this to exist, it is a little odd that it's going to be a commercial thing. It'll be interesting to see what Sony's reaction, if any, will be.
| Linux on Xbox Update It's not quite there yet, but ZDNet has posted an update on the Linux to Xbox port (they seem to be particularly interested in this story for some reason). The latest news is that they have released a pre-alpha version of the modified BIOS for the system. A big step, if not a particularly exciting one to your average joe. | |
| Kingdom Hearts Previews Two hands-on previews of Square's Kingdom Hearts are online tonight, courtesy of PS2.IGN and GameSpot. Both offer impressions of a near-final build of the game, along with shots and movies (although the usual subscription restrictions apply for both sites). | |
| Robotech Preview Also at GameSpot are their hands-on impressions of Robotech: Battlecry, the eagerly anticipated (if somewhat controversial to some) action game based on the venerable anime show. | |
| Toe Jam & Earl III Renamed As noted in this story at PlanetXbox, Sega appears to have renamed Toe Jam & Earl III from the moniker "All Funked Up" to the somewhat less risqué "Mission to Earth." | |
| PS2 Rumors PS2.IGN has posted their latest rumors column, and as usual, it contains a few interesting items which should be taken with a grain or two of salt. There's a reasonably reliable claim that EA has a third James Bond title in the works (no shockers there), as well as the suggestion that Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell might be on its way to the PS2 after its Xbox debut, and word that Final Fight might be reborn as a budget-priced title for PSOne. | |
| GameCube Online Libraries Software developer Multiterm announced today that they are working on licensable libraries for Nintendo's GameCube network adapters. The middleware is in beta testing now, with a release scheduled for September. | |
| Dead to Rights Movies Four gameplay movies from Namco's upcoming Xbox title Dead to Rights are up at XenGamers tonight. |

"Deja Vu All Over Again"
"...While Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Metroid Prime, and Star Fox Adventures will rack up the dollars, there's really not any third-party games coming up to get excited about. Once again, Nintendo is trying to go it alone -- and we all saw where it got them last time...
...The recent handoff of big licenses like F-Zero to Sega shows you how devoid of new talent Nintendo is -- they have a limited number of developers to work on GameCube titles and Nintendo knows they can't wait years to release GC versions of their biggest name series. If Rare jumps ship, Nintendo will be faced with a double whammy ...If the rumors turn out to be true, the fate of the GameCube may be sealed the moment Rare flies the coup. I'm not sure exactly what's going on in the board meetings and hallways in Kyoto, but all is not well with GameCube...."

Design hasn’t caught up with technology in being able to fill all that extra space effectively. Metroid doesn’t have the icy lines or endless vistas of Halo, but for my money, it kicks five rounds of crap out of it artistically. It’s more attractive, more focused, more detailed, better DESIGNED.

Do you have to have a modded PS2 to use this BroadQ thing, or is that only required for the beta version of the hardware?

OoooOOOooo. Change is good.
Splinter Cell is exclusive to the Xbox until the end of 2002, which basically makes it useless as a Xbox killer app since the game is scheduled to come out in November anyway.
IGN is fucking retarded. It's never been been a secret that the game is being released on multiple platfroms.

Finally...FINALLY! Today, I put my order in for the CobaltFlux pad. They've been so helpful with me and are trying hard to build a solid customer-business with the DDR community by putting up a forum and actually answering questions and that dedication has helped me in coming to my decision. That and the pad is supposed to be totally awesome. They drove over it with SUV and it still worked.
They'll hopefully finish construction this week and get it shipped out by Friday, Monday at the latest. I paid for 2-day air since I move the 10th and didn't wanna take any chances. I know a few Shackers may be interested in this, so don't worry, I'll take plenty of pictures, do a few videos, and write a nice "first impressions" piece with a full review in a few weeks. Maybe I'll start a little weblog of sorts? With day to day assesments? Tons of peeps from the DDR Freaks forum have been IMing me want to know what the low-down is, so I'm sure they'll find that helpful.
So that's the end of my search. Now begins the actual testing. WEEE!
