Late Night Consoling

Some of the most exciting news to come along in well...days, I guess, comes by way of an ad placed in the Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu, taken out by the developers of the wonderful PS2 title ICO, mentioning that they are looking to hire people for their next project. Here's a look at that ad, and you'll note that it looks remarkably like ICO...well, the cat's out of the bag, as Sony has confirmed that a direct sequel to the game is underway. While the original certainly isn't for everyone (I got my copy from my sister, who absolutely hated it) once you get caught up in its very unique charm, it's tough to let go. Hopefully we'll find out more about this game in the relatively near future.

Xbox Steel Battalion Delayed Capcom has pushed the Japanese release of Tekki (known here as Steel Battalion) back to September 5th from its original August 22nd date. No reason is given, but my guess is that it's probably related to mass production of that insane controler.
PSOne A Look Back at Dragon Warrior VII An interesting article is up at GameForms tonight. The article is first in a series which takes a fresh look at Dragon Warrior VII, the oft-delayed and absolutely humongous RPG from Enix. It starts with an explanation from the author as to why he waited so long to finally play the thing, and then moves into a gameplay diary.
Dreamcast Ikaruga Super Limited Bad news for fans of Treasure's shooters...their upcoming title Ikaruga won't be easy to get your hands on. While CvG is reporting that the game will be an online Dreamcast-Direct exclusive (they also say it "may" not come out in the West...don't hold your breath on that one), import shop NCS has a clarification on the issue, saying that it will be available elsewhere, but not in very large quantities.
Dreamcast One last Dreamcast game Believe it or not, Ikaruga won't be the absolute last Dreamcast game over in Japan...a game called Bittersweet Fools will also be released late next month. It's an anime novel, and absolutely will never be released outside of Japan.
GameCube Xbox GameBoy Advance Screenshots! (And movies) Computer and Video Games has new screenshots online from Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine and Star Fox Adventures (GC), and new shots from Star Wars Episode II: New Droid Army (GBA) and more gameplay movies from Super Mario Sunshine are up at IGN.
GameCube GameCube Impressions PlanetGameCube has new hands-on impressions of Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda and one, two, three different writeups on Super Mario Sunshine. Also, Eurogamer has their own writeup of Zelda, based on their impressions at Nintendo's London event, and the final part of Gamers.com's massive Super Mario Sunshine preview is up.
PS2 Unlimited SaGa Shots Some screenshots and character sketches from Square's Unlimited SaGa are up at PS2.IGN. Like the last SaGa title, this one has a 2D, but artistic flair to its visual style, making the screenshots and sketches pretty indistinguishable at times.
Xbox Brute Force Interview Computer and Video Games has conducted an interview with Erin Roberts, the producer of the upcoming Xbox title Brute Force.
GBA GBA TV Tuner A hands-on preview of a TV Tuner for the Game Boy Advance is up at Pocket.IGN tonight. It's clumsy and the PAL version only, but I guess some people dig this sort of thing. In all fairness, it does look like it's better than the ones for the Turbo Express or Game Gear.
PS2 Final Fantasy XI Update Curious to know the latest on Square's troubled Final Fantasy XI launch? Gamers.com has posted a report from one beta test -- er...user of the game, who provides details on problems big and small.
Console Game of the Evening: Magical School Lunar for the Sega Saturn. One of two Lunar titles never released in this country, and one I've never played myself. From what I've seen and heard, it doesn't sound like we're missing much.

  • Okay I know this has nothing to do with anything...

Playing Conker's Bad Fur Day for the first time, except on my PC -emulated of course- and at 1280x1024 I must admit that WOW does it look pretty decent (I don't think I've ever seen so many colors all in one place before ever) but also it's quite funny and reasonably enjoyable! Remember, this was the first true "adult" Nintendo game (something I had forgotten) and, man does it show. Difficulty level is fairly high, which is surprising but welcome.

Having a HammerheadFX helps as it has analog control, overall a far superior controller than the actual N64 gamepad. Can't imagine playing this with a keyboard as it just wouldn't work right. If you have a control pad and haven't tried it yet, then DO.

Highly recommend this for anyone looking for something different to play and who is a bit jaded by recent PC offerings, and who also may be looking for something kickass to play on the cheap (it's free for the taking) and adult oriented but juvenile at the same time. Sound is INCREDIBLE and the graphics at high rez are equally as good. Story has kept me entranced for the past seven hours or so, and I'll probably be going all night at this rate.

Oh well, I like I said - nothing to do with current events, but sometimes a look to the past can yield some surprising rewards.
