Late Night Consoling

Last night's comment about EA's decision to support progressive scan in their GameCube titles provoked a response from Jack Mathews, who said Nintendo does not in fact require their developers to support 480p in their games. That's a shame, IMHO. Granted, I don't own an HDTV (yet) but I think with this generation of consoles more advanced hardware should really be supported, if only because we're in a state of transition, at least when it comes to high-end A/V setups. That means more games should support a 16:9 resolution, 480p video output, and most of all, true DD5.1 surround sound. In fairness though, after playing a few GameCube games, I must admit that the system does wonders with a standard composite audio plug (and my setup doesn't even support DPL 2.0). Still, if this stuff is ever going to gain acceptance, it needs to be fully embraced by developers. It'll happen eventually, but I think some companies could be doing more to push things along.

Xbox Xbox Q&A GameSpot has conducted a Q&A with David Hufford, the Xbox product manager at Microsoft. Among the many topics covered in the brief interview are the status of the next Halo (contrary to rumors, it's a totally new game, not just a re-release with online functionality), the importance of Counter-Strike on Xbox, and his thoughts on Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball.
GameCube Mario Sunshine Update I can't do an LNC without the latest roundup of Mario Sunshine news, can I? Of course not. Gamers.com has still more of their massive preview of the game online, while new impressions can be found at PlanetGameCube (*spoiler warning*), along with translations of the Japanese menus for those of you planning on importing the game.
Xbox 3DO on Xbox In a huge turnaround, 3DO announced today that they will be developing games for the Xbox. This is news not because 3DO's such an important publisher, but rather because 3DO has been the most vocal opponent to the system from day one, declaring that it would wind up a distant third behind Sony and Nintendo (and as such wasn't worthy of the latest Army Men games).
GameCube PS2 Xbox BloodRayne Preview New previews of BloodRayne, the sorta-but-not-quite-entirely sequel to Nocturne have hit the web...hands-on impressions can be found at both IGN and GameSpot.
GameCube GameBoy Advance New Nintendo Hardware Releases Nintendo announced today some new hardware that will be released in time for the holiday shopping season...first is a $189.95 box that will be released on October 14th and includes an Indigo GameCube, Super Mario Sunshine and a Memory Card 59, while following a few weeks later on November 3rd (just a week before my wedding!) is a new platinum GBA and matching GameCube, each sold separately for their standard prices.
Xbox New Xbox Shots New shots from Sega's Panzer Dragoon Orta can be found at GameSpot tonight, while the official Xbox site was updated today with new screenshots from Kakuto Chojin (thanks PlanetXbox).
GameCube New GameCube Shots Cube.IGN has some new screenshots from Phantasy Star Online I & II and Super Monkey Ball 2 tonight (although if you're not an Insider subscriber, you'll only be able to see a couple of them).
PS2 Kingdom Hearts Update SquareSoft made a big update to their official Kingdom Hearts site today, with new gameplay information and screenshots (hit "game info" to see it). I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this game rules.
Console Game of the Evening: Einhander for the PSOne. This game marks SquareSoft's only foray into the side-scrolling shooter genre, and while it's extremely difficult, it's an excellent game nonetheless. It's no Treasure title, but it's definitely worth a look for fans of this sort of thing.
