Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Jul 24, 2002 8:30pm PDTLast night's comment about EA's decision to support progressive scan in their GameCube titles provoked a response from Jack Mathews, who said Nintendo does not in fact require their developers to support 480p in their games. That's a shame, IMHO. Granted, I don't own an HDTV (yet) but I think with this generation of consoles more advanced hardware should really be supported, if only because we're in a state of transition, at least when it comes to high-end A/V setups. That means more games should support a 16:9 resolution, 480p video output, and most of all, true DD5.1 surround sound. In fairness though, after playing a few GameCube games, I must admit that the system does wonders with a standard composite audio plug (and my setup doesn't even support DPL 2.0). Still, if this stuff is ever going to gain acceptance, it needs to be fully embraced by developers. It'll happen eventually, but I think some companies could be doing more to push things along.
| Xbox Q&A GameSpot has conducted a Q&A with David Hufford, the Xbox product manager at Microsoft. Among the many topics covered in the brief interview are the status of the next Halo (contrary to rumors, it's a totally new game, not just a re-release with online functionality), the importance of Counter-Strike on Xbox, and his thoughts on Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball. | |
| Mario Sunshine Update I can't do an LNC without the latest roundup of Mario Sunshine news, can I? Of course not. Gamers.com has still more of their massive preview of the game online, while new impressions can be found at PlanetGameCube (*spoiler warning*), along with translations of the Japanese menus for those of you planning on importing the game. | |
| 3DO on Xbox In a huge turnaround, 3DO announced today that they will be developing games for the Xbox. This is news not because 3DO's such an important publisher, but rather because 3DO has been the most vocal opponent to the system from day one, declaring that it would wind up a distant third behind Sony and Nintendo (and as such wasn't worthy of the latest Army Men games). | |
| BloodRayne Preview New previews of BloodRayne, the sorta-but-not-quite-entirely sequel to Nocturne have hit the web...hands-on impressions can be found at both IGN and GameSpot. | |
| New Nintendo Hardware Releases Nintendo announced today some new hardware that will be released in time for the holiday shopping season...first is a $189.95 box that will be released on October 14th and includes an Indigo GameCube, Super Mario Sunshine and a Memory Card 59, while following a few weeks later on November 3rd (just a week before my wedding!) is a new platinum GBA and matching GameCube, each sold separately for their standard prices. | |
| New Xbox Shots New shots from Sega's Panzer Dragoon Orta can be found at GameSpot tonight, while the official Xbox site was updated today with new screenshots from Kakuto Chojin (thanks PlanetXbox). | |
| New GameCube Shots Cube.IGN has some new screenshots from Phantasy Star Online I & II and Super Monkey Ball 2 tonight (although if you're not an Insider subscriber, you'll only be able to see a couple of them). | |
| Kingdom Hearts Update SquareSoft made a big update to their official Kingdom Hearts site today, with new gameplay information and screenshots (hit "game info" to see it). I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this game rules. |

While there are a few graphical elements in the game that could've used a little more studio time, there are just as many gameplay elements that enhance the game. If it's another mythic world your after, Enclave should not be overlooked.
Should have been a standalone post

The results are grand, and it only makes me cross my fingers harder that Nintendo takes steps into the same direction (read Sunshine, Prime, Starfox, Zelda).
So now that it's out in Japan... what's the technical dirt on Mario Sunshine? Does it support the 16:9 ratio? I'm assuming it supports progressive scan output, since all of Nintendo's GC games have so far (I think). None of the import hand-on previews mention a thing about it. :[

Couple things I'd change:
-Make anything blocking Mario from the camera's view translucent.
-This only happens sometimes(and should be considered minor given the frequency in which it occurs): After the player adjusts the camera, KEEP IT THERE.
I know camera trouble is a given in any 3d platformer, but those problems above, IMO, could have been avoided.
With that said, this game is truly the bees knees. Shine get, mofos.

I have to agree with the others, though. I wasn't too enthused with the early shots of this game and I haven't look at any new shots since, as to not have my strings plucked. That is until tonight. I thought I'd never say it and I'm still bitter at Sega/Smilebit for doing it but this might be the game ::sucking it up:: worth getting an ::gulp:: X-Sux for. ::exhale:: :[

I swear my jaw was on the ground for 2 straight hours. We only ended up playing Rogue Squadron just because we were so floored by how good it looked we wanted to see every damn mission on that TV. Managed to pop in RE for a few minutes to check out the 'Aqua Ring' portion as well.
So yeah, if I'm in the papers tomorrow for holding up a bunch of liqour stores in order to get $8K you'll know why.....

T4 = progressive scan...
T4 = Namco...

Dear Namco,
Please come out with a sequel to Klonoa (not that volleyball game) that supports both progressive scan and 16:9 before I die. A tie-in that reunites Klonoa with Huepow from phantomile (I know, I know, but Empire of Dreams doesn't count!) or Lolo from Lunatea wouldn't hurt either. :[
Thanks,

You've never played on a 55" Widescreen HDTV then.. =) To be perfectly honest. I have a GC, a PS2 and an Xbox.. I buy all my games now Xbox unless it's something I cant get on that system. Yes, GameCube and PS2 look ok, and I am running component video on all three systems, but having that type of setup really brings out jaggies and video quality just really is not that good. However, the Xbox looks awesome due to the native 480p support. I picked up NCAA Football 2003 for the Xbox last night and was pleased to find that it also supports 16:9. THe Xbox for me blows away the display of the other two systems in this configuration. If I was using a 31" 4:3 setup, they would be apples and oranges, but not with the higher-end equipment. Kudos to MS for making 480p mandatory. Now if only they'd make 16:9 =)

1080i HD/16x9 Aspect Ratio/DD5.1 or DTS tracks.
That's what they should be aiming for - nothing less.

For hard pads, it's down to either the MyMyBox or CobaltFlux. Couple of problems arised today. Firstly, there isn't a reliable seller at all for the MyMyBox pad on eBay and no store online sells 'em. Not only that, but tons of peeps are complaining that they're getting their pads damaged right from the start. Sucks.
CobaltFlux sounds like they're totally legit and willing to work for the customer. One guy said he bought a pad and they e-mailed him like a week later saying they have an even better version and they'll give it to him for free if they send back the other one...after he receives the new one. Rock, right?
Sadly, I just noticed the bottom corner buttons are start and select, and if you didn't know, those two buttons restart the friggin' game. Usually on the softpad, they're tiny buttons above all the other buttons, but if they're on the bottom, I'm sure I'll accidently restart my game many times.
Once again, this is hell. I should start a business.

Yes, but unlike the X-Box games, Nintendo is known for churning out quality, original games. Right now, the only game I've played which floored me on the X-Box is Halo....... the PS2 has GTA3, Gran Turismo A-Spec, Rez, Devil May Cry...... God knows how many Nintendo's gonna have.
Content > console sales. Work on it, or Sony and Nintendo will make you their respective bitches.

Dammit Jason, my heart skipped a beat when I read that! If the game is PSO, you best include the word "Online" somewhere.
