Unreal Tournament 2003 Trailer
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 24, 2002 7:42pm PDTThanks to Preacher at Unreality who let us know about an Unreal Tournament 2003 trailer released by Infogrames Germany. The original video was almost the size of a post stamp, but it does show about a minute of footage from the game and we managed to get a hold of a higher res video shortly afterwards. You can grab the tiny 1.5mb download or 17.5mb download from FileShack courtesy of Speakeasy. update by Steve: Through some super cool hax0ring, (kind of like that stuff you see in the movies where that guy clicks the "enhance" button on the blurry picture and it gets better) we just got a hold of a spunky high res video trailer of the game. Here you go:
- Low res 1.5meg crap - High res 17.4meg video

Anyway, now that is settled...Yeah...the trailer lookes kewl...alot the the beginning movie for Q3 Arena.
And I certainly agree with some of you...Instead of spending time of trailers...get the damn game out!!!

So yeah, the announcer is pretty damned important, as is the sound of gibbage, the screams of pain, etc...

UT's movement is inferior to the Quake series. You simply cant beat strafe jumping as a skillful way to move around the map. Its something that is learned and masterable, but not easy, and can give a great advantage. UT does not have this.
The only thing that can save UT2k3's ass as a competitive game is some very well done weapon physics, and fast TIGHT gameplay. No random shooting newbie gameplay - aka cs.
I'm not holding my breath (partly because at this rate, it won't be out before doomsday=)). I'll just make a quick prediction and say UT2k3 will suck, and people will stick with Q3 and CS until doom3, or something better comes along. Sides, the CPL is going to start supporting Quake 3 again, so who needs UT? =D

Different movement than Quake 3 -> Uh, yeah, DUH, this is UT. I never liked the movement in Q3. When I lift my finger off of the "move forward" button I expect to stop pretty quickly - I don't want to slide 4 feet. I love Q3 but that's always bothered me.
Gay Announcer -> What voice? The trailer voiceover? That voice is good, but the in-game one is the same guy that did the original UT. Wait until you hear some of the new shit that was recorded...
Demo -> If Mark says "We guess that the demo will be out in 2 weeks" many gamers hear it as "The demo will be out in 2 weeks." Not true. The game ain't ready. We're better at predicting this stuff than GeorgeB, at least. :-)
Revolutionary Graphics-> We want the game to run on many, many systems. High end and low end. It pushes the envelope enough so that it will rule on high end systems and yet, somehow, still run on shit systems.
Movement -> I'm all for bunny hopping. Hop like a rabbit, bitch. Jump like an idiot, jump off of the walls, and run around like Neo in the Matrix. It rules.

Mouse input not very sharp
Netcode pretty weak
Mad choking on the framerates
Framerate issues aside netcode and mouse input are pretty important aspects of the game. However I get the feeling that those have hardly changed. To me it looks like just a graphics upgrade. I hope I am wrong cause I felt UT captured the good old fun DM/FFA feeling from QW times.

And I love UT, so this is kinda hard for me to say, because I want this game to not feel like a clone.

Each additional day - not week, DAY that goes by will amplify any shortcomings of the demo once it does come out. I'm assuming we're waiting because of little bug fixes and polishing it up a little, so any bug that crops up, or lack of polish exhibited after release will now get ripped on even moreso by all of us.

That and the Ion Cannon strike looks... well, really plain. It's just an expanding sphere with an expanding disk where the strike hits. Come on guys, go pop in Turok 1 for the N64 and fire off the atomo-cannon or something. Instead of a disk of energy make it several rings of Praxis (from the opening of Star Trek 6) plazma effects, and instead of just a sphere, make the screen go white for a second (depending on how close you are obviously) and have black lightning shooting inside the sphere to the center of it, or make the ground glow white hot like the beam is cooking everything on approach or SOMETHING. The guy sitting next to Cliffy at the CPL workshop made some great looking particle effects in about 5 minutes of messing with just a few of the properties. Considering how good everything else in the game looks, the Ion Strike really just looks like a throwback to the UT1 redeemer explosion, which again I thought looked pretty plain, but the performance budget on UT1 was a lot tighter, so I didn't mind.
