id Sales Numbers

Since a bit of a debate on game sales erupted when I posted a link to a Forbes article a few days ago stating Ion Storm needed to sell 1.2 million copies of their next 3 games to break even, I emailed Todd Hollenshead up at id Software asking about the sales figures for Quake1 and Quake2 for comparison sake. Here's what Todd sent back:

about 1 million for Quake1, and about 1.2million for Quake2 not including console ports and OEM deals.
So there you have it. I wouldnt be surprised if Ion Storm did pull it off honestly for 1 or 2 of the titles. But 3 in a row is a bit steep.

  • For all those that think ION\'s only got DK, and that they will be bankrupt by next year, let me open up your eyes. Although DK is ION\'s flagship title, Anachronox and Deus EX both look very promising. Anchronox got a good deal of hype from PC Gamer, and from a recent review in PCXL I\'ve concluded--it looks sweet, the Final Fansty IIV for PC sweet. I am looking forward to Anachronox. I don\'t have much on Deus EX, but I hear it looks pretty nice. Even if DK fails misrably the two other titles, I feel, can save ION.

That\'s all the eye opeing for now...

  • I really think that it was 1.2M *combined* sales. Eidos gets about $40 per game, so that would haul in gross revenues of $48M. I\'ve read that Ion has cost something around $28M so far -- far more than 3DR has spent since inception in 1994, and even if you include the next 10 years! ;p (Duke Nukem 3D cost about 350,000 to make, and generated gross revenues over $50M, not including the console ports).

Out of that $48M gross revenues received by Eidos, figure over $4M in cost-of-goods, and $5M in marketing, $30M to cover Ion\'s costs, and what\'s left is Eidos\' profits which of course must pay for their administrative and management staff and numerous running-the-company expenses.

Hey, these figures are guesses and are not worth repeating.
