Warcraft 3 Sells Like Mad
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 22, 2002 6:31am PDTAccording to this press release, Warcraft 3 has already sold more than a million units around the world. It has reached this mark faster than Blizzard's previous two games, Diablo 2 and Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. 4.4 million copies of the game have shipped to retailers worldwide. Thanks HomeLAN Fed.
Following in the tradition of previous Blizzard games, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is now the seventh Blizzard product not only to sell 1 million copies, but also to reach #1 in U.S. sales. The game, which began shipping on July 3, is topping PC sales charts in North America, Europe and Asia. "We are very excited about the worldwide demand for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos," stated Mike Morhaime, Blizzard Entertainment president and co-founder. "We put a lot of effort into polishing every aspect of Warcraft III, and the game's popularity tells us that our long hours and hard work have paid off."

The only thing that bugged me the entire way through was that all the characters I played were dicks. There were respectable heros that you got the play for short periods of time, but the main characters you got were always dicks. I was especially irritated at the human hero, the super asshole. After that campaign I was really looking forward to a new hero, to no avail - now he's "undead", uhg.
Anyway - I still think it's a great game.

Well, they're not cheating, but releasing to all markets (plus mac, which, yes, I know is only about 10% of the market) at the same time makes them hit that 1M mark a lot faster.
Oh, and the game is really good too. That usually helps. :)
Yeah, more coffee on the way.
