Americas Army Day
by Steve Gibson, Jul 04, 2002 10:35am PDTHope everyone is enjoying their holiday in the US. Americas Army Recon came out late last night as a bit of a surprise. By now a lot of people have made it through the training missions and are probably attempting some online play. Here's a thread for you guys to discuss the game being hot or not and all that fun. Oh and for those of you who havent grabbed it yet, some purty pictures and download link.
Gonna give the online play a shot myself some today. If anyone comes up with performance tweaks please drop them in the comments as I believe the default resolution and settings are kinda high.- Download from FileShack via Speakeasy - View screenshots of the training missions - View the official website - View the original thread with some good tips - Post your own comments in this thread

They start you out with this "demo" that you can download. You get hooked, so you eagerly call your local Army recruiter for the full version of the game released on CD.
They now have your phone number and address.
You impatiently wait for the CD to arrive in the mail, and once you have it in your grubby paws, you install it and you are in again. You master the game, gaining skills as time passes. You are more hooked than ever. Weeks later, as your addiction grows to new levels, the Army calls you and asks if you want to "play" in a more high tech virtual realtity "game" that they have at the base. This version of the game requires virtual reality headmounted displays in addition to VR suit that captures your physical movement. Without thinking you make an appointment to "play" the more extensive version of the game at the Army base.
They now have you.
The following day you arrive at the Army base, enter the VR room and they gear you up with the VR headset and suit. You are so hooked on the game that you just want to play. Once you enter this version of the game you see just how much more "high-tech" it truely is. Its nearly like real life. Of course, most of your skills from the home version of the game transfer, but there still is a bit of relearning to do. Within a few hours its all in your grasp. You are owning the other "players".
At the end of the day, the Army recruiter asks if you want to continue to "play". Thinking back to the home version of the game you realize that you could never go back to that primitive version again. The Army's VR version is far more addictive. Again, without thinking you sign the papers.
You are now a soldier in the USA Army. It doesn't take the Army much longer to weed you from the VR simulators into real life combat simulations. Of course you have to put lots of effort towards getting into physical shape, but you don't care anymore. You are hooked more than ever, and because your skills from the VR simulator transfer fairly well into the real life "simulations", you are owning everyone else.
You are the USA's killing machine. It all started with a downloaded demo, which was followed by a full version of the "game". After that you were playing a billion dollar VR "game", and before you knew it, you were splitting skullz of anyone the USA government asked you to "pacify".

If you remember ground zero in NY about 2-3 years back. I never attended but I tied the guy who won there for Q3test. And then in Diablo2 I was the first to beat it online on hell difficulty. My charater was 12 levels ahead of the competition (the farthest gap ever in diablo2 ladder) and I sold my character for $710 after about 10 days of "work" And that was on all the major news pages b/c my ebay auction was getting well more than 1hit per second for over a week. I won my own q3 jersey at huge local lan parties. I could go on but I'll just say I stopped keyboarding a while back.

Also, I have made the firing range my Bitch.
Even, I, the amazing CS Awper from hell cannot hit some of the targets on the first shot because of apparently fucked up hitboxes.
But, this has been solved, as I have made the firing range my Bitch.
Get into the hole at 9, fire off your two clips, you'll be out of the hole.
load your m16, drop it on the ground, run out of the box. it'll replace you at 9 with an m16 and two clips. and your loaded m16 will be on the ground. load. drop. repeat. load. drop. repeat. I ended up with about 6 loaded m16s on the ground before I decided that I had enough ammunition to tackle the range on full auto.
Remember, the game wants to see you load the m16, fire off twenty rounds. so you can fire 19 rounds, drop it, pick up another, fire off twenty, and then reload, and fire off another 20 before it gives you the next part of the test. and then you still need to load, fire off twenty, reload, and fire off twenty, and THEN it'll end.
all in all, you'd better not miss more than 2 targets and you might have had 80 hits

I can confirm this works, just tried it myself :P

Bottom line: this game was rushed.
If they just took an extra week or two to get more servers up and running, to get some better documentation up, and get an in-game browser working, it would be sweet. Luckily, the price is right, so i can't really complain too much. I'll just wait 'till they get some updates out. This game could have some really long legs if they continue to support it. Was counterstrike this good when it came out? I think not.

Probably the best critique i've seen yet. I have a few disagreements. First of all I don't want to start a flame war but I will say this. They called this a Demo. Now once you have completed training (First mistake: Second Level of training is online only, which is what i mainly agree with the originator of this post about. See 2nd paragraph.) This game becomes the best demo I have ever played. Now whether I believe this is an actual demo or not. Yet when I compare the raw size of this demo next to that of previous FPS "Demo"s i have gotten i must admit it is sweet. I must admit if the game is alot larger than this demo with as much mission differential as stated by the Army ( feels wierd saying that) I believe this game could very well be stunning. For a demo it is very skill orientated. From breathing on fire to the way the soldier holds his weapon when crawling in prone mode. I must say if your not into realisism with a bit more life than /RS/GR tom clancy games. This is it. Somehow they have combined a bit of realism and a bit of life to make me like it. The most realistic thing in this game is firefights. This seems to be due to the way they coded the guns. Very Very realistic. You can definatly become very skillfull in this game. Just like one can become skillfull with a real weapon. There is no bunnyhop which I love(hehe though a dive feature to jump out of sprays would be nice, doubt its codeable to feel real though:P). Now All I am saying is if the final game actually makes this version look like a 'Demo' heh. Onto what I didn't like.
The ability or should i say the unavailble Mount Mckenna Servers for the second basic training map. The unavailability of many servers at all. Really nixes this demos release. I wan the Army to realize they created somthing which could possibly dominate anything ever seen in gaming FPS's. If what they say their doing is true. Yet, without the servers ...... umm ...... I'm lost how do you play a game when theres 2500 people at all times alone in the room trying to connect to one server the Mount Mckenna server. Oh the injustice. lol.
I will give you this, if they get the lack of servers fixed. MMM this game is going to draw my time away.
"Man, this game is sooo close to being truly awesome. The ballistics are friggin sweet, the animation is really convincing, and the graphics are pretty much jaw-dropping. Net code is quite good, but no Half-life.
Bottom line: this game was rushed."
