Americas Army Day

by Steve Gibson, Jul 04, 2002 10:35am PDT

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday in the US. Americas Army Recon came out late last night as a bit of a surprise. By now a lot of people have made it through the training missions and are probably attempting some online play. Here's a thread for you guys to discuss the game being hot or not and all that fun. Oh and for those of you who havent grabbed it yet, some purty pictures and download link.

Click to enlarge- Download from FileShack via Speakeasy - View screenshots of the training missions - View the official website - View the original thread with some good tips - Post your own comments in this thread
Gonna give the online play a shot myself some today. If anyone comes up with performance tweaks please drop them in the comments as I believe the default resolution and settings are kinda high.

  • Hey can I get some help shackers..Ive now completed this damn marksmanship training thing like 30 times and everytime score sharpshooter. But in here lies my problem, it wont let me advance? I've talked to there support techs they say keep playing it and sooner or later ill get to advance...WTF? I dont want to freaking play this one mission 800 times...I was also told there was a bug affecting a small amount of people not letting them advance? So I've reinstalled three times downloading from different servers each time and still have the same effect each time,no advancment?????????? plz HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Man, this game is sooo close to being truly awesome. The ballistics are friggin sweet, the animation is really convincing, and the graphics are pretty much jaw-dropping. Net code is quite good, but no Half-life.

Bottom line: this game was rushed."

Probably the best critique i've seen yet. I have a few disagreements. First of all I don't want to start a flame war but I will say this. They called this a Demo. Now once you have completed training (First mistake: Second Level of training is online only, which is what i mainly agree with the originator of this post about. See 2nd paragraph.) This game becomes the best demo I have ever played. Now whether I believe this is an actual demo or not. Yet when I compare the raw size of this demo next to that of previous FPS "Demo"s i have gotten i must admit it is sweet. I must admit if the game is alot larger than this demo with as much mission differential as stated by the Army ( feels wierd saying that) I believe this game could very well be stunning. For a demo it is very skill orientated. From breathing on fire to the way the soldier holds his weapon when crawling in prone mode. I must say if your not into realisism with a bit more life than /RS/GR tom clancy games. This is it. Somehow they have combined a bit of realism and a bit of life to make me like it. The most realistic thing in this game is firefights. This seems to be due to the way they coded the guns. Very Very realistic. You can definatly become very skillfull in this game. Just like one can become skillfull with a real weapon. There is no bunnyhop which I love(hehe though a dive feature to jump out of sprays would be nice, doubt its codeable to feel real though:P). Now All I am saying is if the final game actually makes this version look like a 'Demo' heh. Onto what I didn't like.

The ability or should i say the unavailble Mount Mckenna Servers for the second basic training map. The unavailability of many servers at all. Really nixes this demos release. I wan the Army to realize they created somthing which could possibly dominate anything ever seen in gaming FPS's. If what they say their doing is true. Yet, without the servers ...... umm ...... I'm lost how do you play a game when theres 2500 people at all times alone in the room trying to connect to one server the Mount Mckenna server. Oh the injustice. lol.

I will give you this, if they get the lack of servers fixed. MMM this game is going to draw my time away.

"If they just took an extra week or two to get more servers up and running, to get some better documentation up, and get an in-game browser working, it would be sweet. Luckily, the price is right, so i can't really complain too much. I'll just wait 'till they get some updates out. This game could have some really long legs if they continue to support it. Was counterstrike this good when it came out? I think not. "
