Day of Defeat v3.0 & Valve
by Steve Gibson, Jul 03, 2002 3:27pm PDTJust got the PR from the folks at Valve Software on this one. It looks like the Day of Defeat mod team has decided to get a bit more buddy buddy with Valve.
DoD 3.0 Coming Next Week Valve and the Day of Defeat team today announced an official partnership for continued development of the World War II-based Half-Life MOD. In addition, Day of Defeat 3.0 is due to launch next week, and will mark the introduction of new missions and gameplay types, a new player class, and more. First shown at the Third Annual Half-Life MOD Expo in San Francisco late last year, Day of Defeat is a team-based action game based upon the great battles, equipment, and scenarios of WWII. I imagine some of it is just for their fun, but when they release TF2, they will have 2 complete, marketable games, CS2 and TF2, then HL2 following. If they pick up DoD for themselves, there's another one to compete with the likes of MoH:AA, etc. or whatever is out there at the time.
Now this is similar to what Epic is doing. UT2003, engine licensing, U2, UC, etc. However, the sales from these products is diluted for Epic because the other developer houses need their cut as well. In the case of HL, TF, CS, etc. Valve can pick up "indie" mods and the associated talent for VERY cheap and get to capitalize on the release sales with a much bigger percentage. And by this time you already have generated the interest and fanbase of the previous generations of these "free" mods.
Don't forget, Valve/Gooseman are also getting a cut from CS: CZ, a product that is being modified by a professional development house from a homegrown piece of software bought by Valve on the cheap.
So basically the end result is the gamers get kick ass free mods, and Valve makes more money in the current iteration and by far in the next. Who wants to bet that CS2 will be a retail only game with no downloads?

The DoD guys deserve this. Hopefully if DoD goes retail they won't get screwed, so much effort has been put into this mod.

Valve software today annouce they will be shipping their newest addition to the Half Life product line Platnium Titanium HalfLife Game of the Year edition which includes Half Life, CS, TFC, DOD. The first game to be shipped on a DVD after they leech every possible map for the mods and slap them and the top 500 player created models on a disc. Some schmoe "We felt the gaming community really needed another boxed Half Life and since we really aren't coding anything anymore but patching and mod updates we figured why not suck a few more $$$ out of the sheeple that still think the HL mod engine is great. We've decided to ditch steam in favor of also shipping wallhacks and aimbots since thats why most people still play this game, they'd suck in other games without their hacks. Also we'd like to thank the newsites that support us by grovling at our feet for the newest screenshots just to stay around. "
