Warcraft3 Day
by Steve Gibson, Jul 03, 2002 11:02am PDTToday is indeed Warcraft3 day for the majority of the US. A few lucky people managed to get the game a day or two earlier but today you should be able to find the game in most stores that carry PC games. Have a look at the official Warcraft3 website or perhaps browse through our many Warcraft3 related news items or maybe check out the little release party coverage on GSI or MAYBE go out and buy the game! It's going for close to $60 in a lot of places, so if you can stand waiting you might want to do so for a week or two and wait for the specials. It's a Blizzard game, so the chances of it sucking are pretty slim. Anyone been playing it all day? Is it hot or not?

It feels unpolished in terms of options and play settings. The game looks great, but looks aside, here are gameplay issues which irk me.
- Inability to zoom out further than you currently can
- Computer swarming AI is alive and well
- Inability to adjust difficulty settings in skirmish mode
- Inability to adjust game speed in skirmish mode
- Inability to remove random NPC's around the map (the ones that guard buildings or gold caches)
I didn't buy this game for single player. I bought it for multiplayer and skirmish modes.

This game is really cool as far as RTS's go. I really enjoy the the fact that it's 3D, I am sick of sprites. I am glad Blizzard made sure that it kind of stay true to the original. The story seems cool so far.
Dislikes:
Not being able to really rotate the camera. You can spin it left or right but I would really like to have full controll. This would make this game a 10 instead of 9.Would also be cool to see the world from a first person angle.
I don't like the RPG elements, like the hero's inventory and how you have to level them up to learn spells. Matbe I am just not used to it, but I keep forgetting to check their inventory during battles.
The animations are a bit cheezy. That Paladin guy looks like he's skipping along like a little girl.
Overall:
though this really looks like it is going to be a great game. I can't wait to play some Koreans online, but I need to leard more of the upgrades and units more first.

Pros
----
Beautiful maps
Interesting hero concept
Cons
----
3d adds little
Childish story
Been there, done that a gajillion times already
To be quite honest, the WC3 SP was a letdown for me. After coming off games like Diablo and StarCraft (I *still* install StarCraft and play through the SP every 4 or 5 months, it's that good) WC3 didn't ignite my pants like I thought it was going to.
The storyline was rather blah (as a poster below me elaborated on, it's freakily close to the StarCraft plot) and did almost nothing to get me motivated. The twist at the end of the human campaign was kinda neat but semi predictable. I quite honestly hated every mission playing undead. I don't know if it was because I didn't like their lack of a heavy (or even approaching heavy) melee fighter in the first couple levels or because I kept having Zerg flashbacks.
The hero idea *is* pretty neat but unfortunately tends to cast a large shadow on everything else. A high level hero just makes meat out tons of enemy units and the reverse is true as well, and CPU controlled heros have perfect control over spellcasting. Watching a nicely executed attack get blended by a single enemy unit before you can kill it is kind of frustrating.
Most of the time you could really have a dozen or so combat units with your hero walking around if you want to avoid large resource loss to upkeep. Whereas I was REALLY looking forward to this aspect of gameplay in WC3 (tired of sending in 4 dozen units in SC on patrol and watching the fireworks) I actually came to dislike it. I've been playing RTS games for 15 years (original Castles anyone?) so I consider myself a pretty good player. Had tons of fun playing SC SP and MP and did pretty good on the rankings. But every time I sent in my units in a large melee in WC3 I felt as though I had lost control of the battle. I felt as though there was no real way to do combat manuvers like flankings, etc. Yes I realize many people will refute this point, and that's why I prefaced the comments with "I felt".
What did I like about the game you ask? The cinematic cutscenes are spectacular as you would expect from Blizzard, I wish other developers would learn from this. The voices of the units when clicked on rapidly are the best in a WarCraft/StarCraft series yet (the dryad made me spit Coke across my office the first time I got to her final statement). Autocasting is a HUGE addition to the genre and something that every RTS game should have in some aspect. Allowing people to customize a unit to a certain extent is pretty cool as well, but once you've done it a couple times that unit just dwarfs (no offense to any mountain kings out there) every other unit. Outtakes were good as well, great stuff.
Things I didn't like? I'll encase them in the spoiler tag because I'm gonna get specific.
Not being able to use all the heros from low to high levels seriously pissed me off. You never play the Dread Lord hero and barely get exposure to the Arch Mage, Demon Hunter, and Lich.
Not being able to play all the units to their fullest extent. Chimeras anyone?
Non-original plot. See StarCraft. It sparkled in a couple areas (Paladin's slow change towards evil, very nice) but in general was tarnished.
The game was impossibly easy on normal difficulty and just plain impossible in parts on Difficult.
Thanks for listening. And by the way, I will still buy Blizzard's games in the future. One slightly stale piece of bread does not the loaf condemn.

Few things I don't like:
-Player/Food cap @ 90... got into big battles and had to behead some of my Peasents to get more army.
-I had about 8000 wood, and no gold. While I know AoE is a different game, Id like to be able to swap say 800 wood for 100 gold or something crazy.
-When playing on LAN, your allies cannot get into your zepplins even if they have shared control.
-This last one I can't explain....our [bro and i] first game..we got rushed in a matter of 10mins by the cpu. Second game, same thing. 3rd game....took about 2hrs...we didn't see them until we stormed them...4th game...got rushed. Not enjoying that aspect.. the rushing is fine, but how does the cpu get level 7 in a matter of mins.
overall... good game. Will be purchasing my copy tomorrow so my bro can have his CD back. =)
Also add magic users. Magic users cast things like slow, heal, raise corpse into skeletons, ensare, etc. A lot like Starcraft mages (defilers, science vessal, arbiter). Some of the mages have auto-cast ability. Human priests can be set to auto-cast heal to surrounding friendly units, which is a godsend. Other races' mages autocast things like slow, raise dead into skeleton, or curse.
Implement 4 races. The races seem drastically different, but really they just mix and match the same basic attributes. For instance, Dark Elves heal using their farm building, while Humans have priest units. The Undead only have one heal spell from one of the heros, but instead can do things like raise dead, which in the long run is a lot like heal. The races do seem balanced well, and do cater to different playing styles, as some races have to spend time micro-managing different aspects of themselves.
Oh, and switch to a 3D engine.
Hmm. That's about it. I suppose when written down it seems like a lot, but it isn't all that special. You can't rush anymore, as there are neutral units around the map, which are for stopping rushes and leveling up heroes. There are also neutral building where you can buy things like goblin sappers, potions for heros (like +500 HP, or +2 armor to friendly units for 60 seconds), or Ogre Mages (bloodlust ;D ).
The gameplay boils down to building a base, create a small battle group and a hero, then going to beat up on the neutral units to level up. Continue making heroes (three per race) and a nice battle group until you feel your heroes are powerful enough to beat up the enemy. Run into battle, frantically hit tab and use magic and counter-magic. If you are doing well 20 minutes into a game, you'll have powerful heroes (usually 2 at that point), an expansion base, and the enemy won't. You acheive this by building fast and leveling your heroes on the neutral units before your enemy can. Once all the neutral units are dead, if you have better heroes, you win. Leveling up after the neutral units are dead is about fscking impossible, because you must beat up the enemy guys. Good luck doing that if his heroes are even 1 or 2 levels above yours. Once heroes hit level 5 or 6, base defences become pretty much useless, but at least all buildings take a TON of hits except from siege weapons. So you can at least get your own battle group back to base in time, even from halfway across the map.

I was dissapointed. But the game isn't bad. The villains are lame and there's too many "simple communication mistakes".
Plus there's like 3 throwaway battles per race which leaves you with like 4 good battles per race. :(
Oh well it's ok, just not what I hoped! :)

Dune 2 rocked, we all know that (ok the older ones here) but Command and Conquer 1 really thrashed Warcraft 1 originally - the storyline the movies the whole aspect of C&C 1 was "l33t" it was just fun and had a lot of great idea's and made the game enjoyable.
In War 1 and 2 - you get told about the mission in the prologue to the mission and then play the mission but don't hear anymore about it besides knowing your goal is to "get to x and kill teh boss!" etc.
(gameplay spoilers, NOT storyline spoilers coming)
In War 3 as you play the plot develops with in game, in engine storylines, NOTE: NOT cutscenes, they have external camera view cutscenes also, but these ones devlop literally as you move your hero to the new base - someone will run out a building and start telling you something, then you move to the forest where something else might happen etc - it's very very very well done - and the graphics leave the beta FOR DEAD - there's so many scenes with reeds in the water, waterfalls - swamps, windmills, paddocks - fences little touches which will just blow you away on the detail.
The storyline is excellent and the character development PRETTY damn good (specially for an RTS) - the missions are a TINY bit too easy on "normal" mode (only normal and hard) but I've not tried hard at all - could be slightly too hard? :)
You can still blow up animals like boars, sheep, seals, vultures etc.
Multiplayer the game kicks ass also - it just thrashes "tank rush" tactic bullshit starcraft etc because the hero can make or break a battle - within reason of course, but he (or she) definately comes in handy.
I'd easily rate this game a 9.5/10 for an RTS and as an overall game if you're not into these type of games it's still a good 8/10.
Any questions?

I guess the reason I like this game so much comes from the single player story line. It just flows so well from race to race. So simple to manage too, I can play this game with one hand and fap with the other...perfect.

The game itself is great of course, my only complaint is that it is too much like Starcraft. Most people complain the other way, that it isn't enough like Starcraft, because they'd rather have a game where macro wins over micro, where attack moving the army into the opponent's base is the only strategy required. And I'm not just talking about SP, because my GOD the SP of War3 is the EXACT same story as Starcraft's! Only difference is instead of one race trying to find it's way and build itself into something greater(Terran), we have two races doing that(Alliance and Orcs). Then we have our standard evil, all-destructive race composed of endless, mindless beasties that have come and threatened everything, only with War3 add the Demons as an influence and you've got the Undead(also known as Undead). The Undead even build their structues on Creep!...I mean, Blight! Then, of course, we have our enigmatic race of high beings that embrace magic and were at peace with themselves until this new onslaught threatened their land, and now they must come and rescue everyone at the end of the day. Protoss = Night Elves. Let's not forget the human that gets corrupted by this evil, destructive race(Kerrigan = *Not gonna spoil it*), and the fact that at the end of the whole thing, everything is in ruins, the evil race of baddies mindless baddies has been fought off, and the human that has been corrupted goes into exhile waiting to return and destroy all(War3 expansion, anyone?). This is no spoiler btw, when Blizzard announced World of Warcraft they made it very clear that Humans and Orcs would still be around and that the "face of the world would be changed completely after War3". They basically gave away the already predictable result of the War3 story.
Okay so War3 SP story = Starcraft SP story, doesn't really matter SP is only a tutorial for multiplayer. What really matters in Blizzard games are the multi component, that's what I buy their games for, because they can last you a LONG time with their deep multiplayer. I like it a lot, I beta tested and it's a great game especially when you get into all the spells and using heroes properly and all that. But again, too much like SC. Battles are too big, food limit is too high, and Upkeep doesn't penalize enough. Again, this is totally opposite of what many people think. Most people would rather be able to sit in their base, mass an army bigger than anything, and attack move their huge ass army in the general direction of the opponent's base. Me, I was hoping for a more RPG-centric game, with COMPLETE micromanagement being the name of the game(micro is still far more important in War3 than SC which is cool). Originally Blizzard said there would be far less base management, yet I see nearly the same amount of base and resource management required as SC(granted, it's a little less in War3 but not nearly by enough; usually you'll have about 8-10 workers in War3 without expansions - SC on a NON-MONEY MAP was what, around 8-12?). I was hoping for something more like Myth than SC, only with deeper RPG elements. It's no surprise I'm in a minority on this but hey, I like fresh games with *new* styles of gameplay. All in all though, War3 still rocks.

Look for it to use the War3 engine but with more Diablo 2 focus, sorta.
There are Starcraft units available in the game, hidden in places, as spoilers. You can control a Hydralisk at one point.
