Americas Army Tomorrow

The 'Recon version' of Americas Army is slated for release tomorrow along with that American July 4th holiday. There are a couple of previews floating around to check out. Have a looksee at what's up at GameSpot or HomeLAN for some previews. There are also some shots over at XGR then an interview with the executive producer discussing the game.

Operations is primarily a squad-based multiplayer game not unlike Counter-Strike. You pick a team to play as, you select your primary weapon, and you try to eliminate the bad guys. But before you're allowed to go out on the battlefield, you, like every soldier, have to go through boot camp first. Unlike the real thing, however, doing so in Operations is a snap. You'll simply create an online persona by picking a unique handle and password, and then you'll participate in the first of several training sessions, this one for rifle marksmanship. Normally, this portion of training takes place between weeks three and five of boot camp, but you'll be able to complete it within a few minutes.

Maarten attempted to take some screenshots of the beta yesterday but ran in to some 'issues' and I've had the woman distracting me from any of that goofy game playing stuff the past couple of days. Will try to get something more to you guys about this game this evening for ya.

I think it's stupid that no one plays "terrorist".

An AK 47 handles very differently from an M16/M4. So it won't work to have them used interchangebly.

If I shoot someone on the opposing team, is he shot by an AK47 bullet or an M16 bullet? They don't do the same amounts of damage! Also, since the enemy is firing AK47 it's not realistic for them to have the aim of someone who's shooting an M16. Ak 47 has a lot more recoil making it a lot harder to aim.

It's just stupid. They should just have one team play terrorists.

What exactly does this mean: "...and put out a kit so people can run their own servers at home."

One might conclude from this that there will be a limited number of servers, since there's no way to set up servers on our own. Unless HomeLANFed is planning on adding 50 servers for this game? And what about us East Coast types who don't get sub-100 pings to HLF (yes, that last bit was a bit whiney)?

This looks more like opflash than anything else. Look at the size of the maps. You won't see circle strafing and bunny hop gayness in this game. 'least I hope not.
