Intel Merced Slipping

With all that positive press AMD is getting for the K7, you would think Intel is scrambling to get things going and push out stuff ahead of schedule to match up right? Well things arent going so well at the Intel camp. Check out the latest word that the Intel Merced may be slipping fiurther. Thanks to the ArsTechnica gimps for this one.

The latest lag, which could put off Merced's release by a few weeks or months, won't be as significant as the delay Intel imposed last year when it shifted the 64-bit chip's debut from the end of 1999 to mid-2000.

  • yes they do have AMD commercials. they came out around the time the K6 was first out and
AMD briefly had \"the fastest X86 processor in existence\" that didn\'t last long though. Intel brought out
their P2 and that was that. But yes, AMD does have commercials and I bet you $5000 that they have a large advertising campaign for Athlon.
Expect something similiar to a car commercial only instead of crap about leases and interest rates and cash back it will be dumbed down techno-jargon comparing the Athlon to the P3.
Maybe some catchy techno, say fatboy slim playing... AMD should hire me for their marketing campaign :) i got this shit all planned out.

  • Intel is a big business company. Currently, without the likes of AMD
or even Cyrix, they\'d be getting slapped with more monopoly suits
(See Microsoft) than a large stick could be shaked at. Smart money is that Intel is letting AMD have breathing room to give them a competitive start. This stimulates the market and keeps the government off thier back. And they may just be kicking back to see if the Athelon is everything it\'s hyped up to be. Intel has the money and resources to play like that.

Either way, some good industrial competition will spark even better technologies and give us all more of what we want - better processors for less money! Good luck AMD, I hope you don\'t bone this up.

Now lets see what happens to Microsoft and Linux a few years down the road...

  • AMD is going to take a huge bite out of intel\'s market share.
What I suspect is going on here is that intel KNOWS this is
inevitable and instead of trying to fight it like they have in the
past (ie the Celeron), they are going to use it to their advantage.
The DOJ has been looking into intel over the past few years for
monopolistic practices and anti-trust violations, intel knows that
unless they have valid compition the DOJ could easily win a case.
So instead of rushing a product out and trying to fight AMD they are
sitting it out a little, letting AMD take some market share and using
their time to produce a product that will beat AMD down the road so
they can win back their market share. Intel has the resources to take
a dip in their profit levels for awhile and they have enough production
capacity that churning out huge amounts of chips rather quickly is not
too big of a problem for them. We are entering into a new era of PC
computing, REAL competition is emerging against the wintel monopoly.
Expect the next few years to see major leaps in technology and major
price drops all brought about by the new compitition.

  • In response to #3...no one is going to bet that in a year alone Intel will still be bigger with more marketshare.

However, if AMD chips are faster, as they appear to be, and cheaper, as they appear to be, AMD will slowly be taking all that pretty market share away from Intel.

We\'ve already seen that Intel had to counter the low end market AMD was stealing with their incredibly low priced chips. Now, add the fact that AMD is going to not only be cheaper, but also faster...or at least of relative equal speed. It doesn\'t take a genius to figure out that AMD\'s market share will begin to grow, and Intel will begin to slip.

  • I think it\'s great to see AMD ahead of Intel in technology. No matter who wins it\'s good for us to have competition between chip makers for faster, better, and cheaper CPU\'s. When a company like Intel or Microsoft get fat and lazy because they won the race through monopolizing the market WE get dated technology and high costs (This Intel - AMD news gives me \"deja vu\" about 3Dfx). It will be interesting to see how long AMD can hold the lead, Intel might start going for the ears (Like Mike Tyson :) if they can\'t beat then with technology.

  • anyone that thinks that intel is screwed should look at the damn figures.

First, Intel is a \'little\' bit bigger then AMD, has a lot more financial reserves, etc.

Second, market share. You think those intel processors are going anywhere anytime soon?

Last, just because a very hardcore group of fanatic gamers prefers the new AMD, doesnt mean dick. You guys represent a next-to-insignificant fraction of the total userbase.

So, anyone wants to bet with me that, in a year, Intel will STILL be bigger and will STILL have more marketshare? In other words, Intel the elephant got screwed by AMD the mosquito? (or however you spell that in English.)
