MS Sacks MindArk
by Steve Gibson, Jun 27, 2002 8:35am PDTFor some fun of the day, the guys at MindArk who are working on Project Entropia 3D got raided by Microsoft with a team of 70 marshalls. Apparently the belief at MindArk is that Microsoft ordered the raid to harass the team since they are in direct competition with Microsoft's Acheron's Call 2 game that is also in production.
Microsoft has accused MindArk of infringement on their software rights, stating that MindArk is willingly and unlawfully using over 600 programs without license. The raid on the MindArk headquarters in Gothenburg is believed to be the largest operation ever conducted by a Swedish court involving court officials from several cities on the west coast of Sweden as well as external personnel recruited for the purpose. [snip]The PR makes some simply stupid claims about their website being more popular than Yahoo and MSN which make me cry. As well as some goofy chest beating about how much better their unreleased game is than Microsoft's unreleased game.. But we'll try to overlook that.

On another topic...I think MS is out of control. Someone...don't know who....needs to knock them down the laddar a little. I would like to see the criminal charges against them in (forgot the country) happen. I would love to see a couple of the VP's in jail in another country. They are a company that is operating with no consiquences to any of their actions...no matter what they do.

If you are in direct competition with Microsoft, in any way or form, register all that software!!! I mean, you should reg it anyway.....
But I guess this is a biased word, no need in fighting it.

Uh, to have a large site is to have a lot of pages. They are not claiming to be the most popular.
Can I make an assumption that someone at shacknews has something against MindArk? Because the post Steve made on this subject was weighted very anti MindArk. I had never heard of them before today, and I could care less about them, but Shacknews implies in it's name that it is a news site, and news coverage requires journalistic integrity. I see little to none of it here.
The very least you could do was READ the press release before you posted.

How the fuck can anyone request a raid? Wouldn't you normally have the police investigate and collect evidence?
The same thing is happening in Denmark btw :-(

1) play up their new whatever-the-hell-it-is software they are developing
2) change the rules of the game so it isn't about their pirating ways (which, I think they are guilty of pirating)- it's trying to take a page from the recent Microsoft = Monopoly rhetoric that is so popular now- and putting the focus on Microsoft being a bully, rather then Mindark pirating.
If Microsoft asked the govt to investigate, then how can Mindark sue them? Also, it mentions three other companies- which ones are those?

they should get busted.
Sorry, but that's how it is. I REALLY don't think that Microsoft is doing this because they're terrified of Project Entropia, but it's foolish to think that the fact that it's a competing company didn't enter into it.
Why don't they do this to Verant and Mythic? umm.. Probably because Verant and Mythic aren't pirating software... or it would be HIGHLY UNLIKELY that they would be pirating software.
