Daikatana Technology

Billy Wilson over at VoodooExtreme fired off an email to John Romero of Ion Storm to ask if they planned on adding support for any of that newfangled technology that video card vendors have been coming out with. (S3TC, T&L, etc). Here's the one liner:

Nope, sorry -- we are finished upping our technology. We're almost finished polishing the game and tech isn't being touched...
Of course, that article I linked yesterday which talks about the financial situation over at Ion Storm seems to be quite a popular topic.

  • #(The dude that keeps pestering me). Well, what you say about ignorance is just your \"opinion\", just as my opinion of the game is that it sucks. I\'m free to my opinion, and you are free to your own. If enough are of the opinion that the game sucks, then it will fail. If a lot of people are of the opinion that I am an idiot, oh well, I won\'t be losing any money over a tarnished image, so who gives a crap what your opinion of me is. Either way, it means nothing cause no money is lost. However, DK stands to lose money, and the opinions of the game DO count. I guess that is why you are unhappy that people are having bad opinions, but hey, you are no-one to tell people how to form their own opinions. If people don\'t like DK based on any or no logic, well, to be blunt, too f\'n bad. Tough, eat it. If they don\'t like it cause it was late, too bad. If it isn\'t liked because it was released on a Tuesday instead of a Wednesday, too bad. They are selling to \'people\', not logic robots.

As far as the demo is concerned, it is exactly that, a demonstration of the game. Why release something if it it does not \'demo\'nstrate the game in action. The whole basis of a demo is to allow people to try what the game is \"going to be like\", and also to expose the game to as many people as possible. If they weren\'t happy with the code, then they should not have released it, should they have ? Hmmm ? I mean, it is supposed to demonstrate how the game will play, don\'t you think ? If they weren\'t happy with the gameplay mechanics on a core level, why did they release a demonstration of a product that would be totally different later ? Do you mean they are going to re-write the whole engine code which has taken so long up to now, just so it will be different than the demo ?? Then why release a demo if it is not a fairly faithful representation of what the final product will be like (notice I don\'t use exacting terms, so don\'t even go there).

I know, let\'s make a demo, then release a totally different game that doesn\'t even match the demo. I guess we wuoldn\'t be able to call it a demo then, would we ?

The reason I wrote a book here, is that I\'ve had enough with this thread. I don\'t think there is anything more to be said to explain my point, cause you\'re not going to get it anyway. The only thing I learned is that you have a problem with other people having opinions that were reached with a different mindset than your own.

  • Here\'s my .02 as if anyone gives a rat\'s ass...

I don\'t give a shit who makes a game if it\'s good. Richard Simmons and Tipper Gore could put out a game and if it were good then I would play it. I play games to have fun, period. Not to participate in some political crap....uhh.....GameX is cool...but the developer is a douche bag so i won\'t play...wtf is that about? I guess we are all different in that respect. As for the demo, yeah i thought it pretty much sucked too BUT I always give a game a chance until the real deal comes out.

So John Romero doesn\'t know jack nor shit about pr/marketing...so what...a lot of people dont. The man did contribute to three of my favorite games of all time doom, doom2, and quake so his product will garner a little more of my attention then something from joe random. I neither like the guy nor hate him....i just know he has put out some cool shite.

My question for you guys is what if *theoretically* the game friggin rocks when it is released? (yes, i know it would have to make a huge turnaround from what i saw in the demo) Will all you anti-romero guys be hipocrites and say it is cool or will you stay your ground and be political followers of some mindless cause against ion?

This isn\'t really a romero/ion only issue that i\'m getting at. If develeperX said something stupid would still dislike their game even if it kicked ass? I\'m just curious as to how some of you think. It is kinda like music....i listen to what i like because the music is good...not because I think the band is cool....i couldn\'t give a fuck about the people behind the music.

  • #126 Oh gee, just because you say so, I must be, huh ? Pretty plain and simple, perfect for what your brain can handle, appaently small bits of pieces, like the word idiot. That was a demo of the game, sure some things will change between then and now, but hey, I\'ve played so many demos/betas/alphas, I can tell you that in 95% of the cases, the core is always the same when it ships. They can tweak that game all they want, you will still have a main core that they are running on. So my point still stands, to which all you can come up with is \'idiot\'. If you think I\'ve proved your point, maybe you should try reading with a little bit more attention, or are there not enough small words for you (like idiot) ?

Believe what you want. Besides, if that is the best reply you can come up with (ie, to call me a name and little else), then you aren\'t even worth the time. Ignorance indeed.

  • Yes I did, played it on a LAN though, and it kicked major ass. I loved the storm sector 7 map, though the sidewinder was the coolest rocket launcher type weapon I\'ve seen in a FPS, and dug the hell out of the shotcycler. The weather effects were extremely cool, haven\'t seen that done as well before either.

Not to mention, and this is a big deal to me, there\'s still the prospect that there are 4 complete worlds in the whole package, and it was only a demo for 1 of them. The weapons in the other episodes sound far more innovative than just \"shotgun\", \"Machine gun\", \"Rocket Launcher\". That\'s a whole shitload of content. Call me blasphemous, but I\'m bored shitless of the same old crap over and over again.

The Mplayer thing was a fiasco, but come on, the final game isn\'t Mplayer only, so why judge it on their shitty server\'s performance? So schedule some time to get over it right after you let go of the \"make you his bitch\" campaign. I\'ve seen far worse ad campaigns than that, and most of them weren\'t trying to do so intentionally.

  • What I specifically disliked about the mplayer demo:

    1. I did not like any of the maps, I thought they worked poorly for deathmatch.
    2. I thought the weapons were horrible. The rocket launcher was screwey because of that spiraling garbage, and it traveled halfway across the level in a second, as well as killing someone with even the slightest bit of splash damage. I don\'t know wtf that green energy spewing thing was supposed to be, it was utterly useless. The C4 was a huge hinderance on gameplay. The shotgun thing was weak and horribly skinned.
    3. I was unimpressed by the graphics. They were too dark in many places, and in other places they just looked sterile.
    4. I simply did not find the game to be fun. I don\'t know how to describe this.
    5. Releasing a demo on mplayer is like telling your customers that you want them to endure pain and frustration. Look at how UT did it, what a difference...
